Overview

A single-disc, 25-track collection of the first and second waves of British punk, Give It Some Punk doesn't necessarily feature the best-known versions of the songs present -- some are live versions used due to licensing restrictions -- but it does hit a lot of the best-known groups (except most obviously for the Clash). In addition to the Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks, Adverts, Eddie & the Hotrods, Wire, X Ray Spex, the Stranglers, Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers, and the Damned, there's also a generous selection of material from the very early '80s, when London punk was beginning to transform into Oi! and hardcore; some of these groups include Slaughter and the Dogs, Sham 69, Chelsea, the English Dogs, Discharge, the U.K. Subs, the Ruts, and Splodgenessabounds. It's not an exceptional overview like Rhino's D.I.Y. installments, but it does present a number of decent to excellent songs in one place. ~ Steve Huey
