In Fitch's wickedly enjoyable latest, Ross Clifton is a traveling jazz pianist who moonlights as a thief, stealing diamonds from the wealthy women he seduces after his gigs. Clifton's well-ordered life begins to unravel when he is asked to spend some time looking after his counterfeiter brother's troublesome 16-year-old son, Cray, whose attitude quickly gets under the laconic piano man's skin. Cray soon catches his felonious uncle in the act and ups the ante—with potentially disastrous consequences—when Clifton goes to visit his dying estranged father. Complicating this situation is Clifton's attraction to Marianne London, a beautiful singer with her own shady sideline. The two performers partner up (both on- and offstage) and talk about going straight until Marianne's past comes back to threaten them. Fitch (Senseless) hits notes suspenseful, romantic, and hilarious, and successfully bundles elements of noir, road novels, and family dramas into one consistently entertaining package. (May)

A jazz pianist moonlights as a thief in an extended comic riff on double lives and fakery. Ross Clifton, the hero of the fourth novel by Fitch (Senseless, 2001, etc.), isn't a world-class piano player, but he's talented enough to get steady gigs around the country in places where he's not forced into his imagined worst-case scenario: playing "Moondance" for crowds of jazz-hating louts. After the gigs are over, he either seduces one of the readily available women at the club, slyly replacing the diamonds on their fingers with lesser stones as they sleep, or steals BMWs. In an earlier life Ross lived extravagantly off his larceny, but as the book opens he's acquired a Zen-like disinterest in worldly things, giving away his money to charities or the needy. Fitch uses this Robin Hood-ish lead to explore how a cheater can live with integrity, but the author approaches the subject with a light touch: The story is full of hijinks, thanks to Ross' teenage nephew Cray, who joins the pianist on the road and unsettles his routines, drinks too much and takes an unhealthy interest in the fine art of stealing. Further prompting Ross to reconsider his behavior is Marianne, a jazz singer whose own scam backfires badly. The array of smoky clubs and late-night conversations gives the novel an appealingly noir-ish feel, and Fitch writes beautifully about music, capturing how a performance can transform the mindsets of a musician and an audience alike. But merging dusky, jazzy moods with comedic set pieces is an inherently unstable mix, and though Fitch has a firm grip on his characters and the story, the dueling tones can make the reader question how seriously to take particular plot turns. A sharp andentertaining hybrid with a few bum notes.

    a wild romantic family noir

    Jazz pianist Ross Clifton travels from gig to gig where he picks up wealthy women attending his performance. He actually makes a much better living robbing diamonds from his affluent tryst partners.

    However Ross' perfect life begins to tank when asked to watch his sixteen year old nephew Cray. Ross cannot stand his brother's son. However, when Cray catches his felonious uncle thieving, he raises the stakes at a time the pianist visits his dying father and falls in love with thieving singer Marianne London. Now his nephew's actions compounded by his girlfriend's past threaten Clifton in ways he could not imagine.

    Give + Take is a wild romantic family noir held together by the felonies that take on a life of their own. The cast is strong, especially the lead trio, but so is the ensemble in pursuit of them in a fast-paced with plenty of action stealing scenes. Readers will enjoy this zany thriller in which the "good" guys' motto is a family that thieves together belongs together as the once finely tuned but now off key antihero pianist must wonder if either his girl or his nephew are the "Backstabbers".
