If there was any flaw with Brandi Carlile's second album, The Story, it's that it was perhaps a touch too austere, painted in amber tones by producer T Bone Burnett. Its 2009 sequel, Give Up the Ghost, opens up and breathes, perhaps partially due to swapping T Bone for Rick Rubin, who retains the spooky, serious vibe but makes things a little less chilly. This isn't sealed off; there is room for guests here, including such L.A. linchpins as Benmont Tench and Red Hot Chili Pepper Chad Smith, but also Elton John and his arranger, Paul Buckmaster. Tellingly, their presence is felt more than heard, as they never remove the spotlight from Carlile, who remains a singularly powerful singer/songwriter. When things are Spartan, her voice is haunting and gripping, wrenching out operatic emotions, but Give Up the Ghost trumps The Story because she allows herself to lighten up, to rock again on "Dreams" and jump into the rollicking "Caroline," which does indeed recall the barrelhouse jaunt of Honky Chateau. Carlile still prefers sobriety to levity but it never feels affected; it's music that gets under your skin and cuts to the bone.

I didn't know what to expect, this was my first time hearing Brandi Carlile. I thoroughly enjoyed it. This is definitely on my new faves list. This is one that I would suggest to others.

I was given this CD and was not at all familiar with Brandi Carile. I have listened to it several times now and I have to say that it just doesn't do a lot for me. Brandi's voice reminds me a bit of Melissa Etheridge (who I do enjoy) and k.d. lang, only a few notes higher than either singer. As for the genre, it leans more towards country than rock. Brandi has one of those voices I would enjoy listening to live in a bar, but as for playing it in my car or on the stereo, I just want to turn it off. I will say that there are some great lyrics and it is more the vocals that bother me than the songs.

I never learn my lesson, I just change my tune....... Words of wisdom, from a woman who knows herself and sings truth. This album is an unexpected pleasure and treasure. Every song is something worth listening to, in particular "That Year" and "Before it Breaks" are astounding. "Dying Day", "Looking Out" and "If There was no You" are excellent. Even my 15 year-old daughter liked it. I will definitely be adding the entire album to my ipod and will definitely memorize these songs very soon. Glad I got the chance to listen to this wonderful album, thanks One2One.

I just picked this CD up and listened through it, and I must say, I rather enjoyed it. It is just as good as her previous album, The Story. Both albums are great. I like her blend of rock, blues, and folk...with the occasional ballad thrown in. It makes for good listening while just driving down the road or background music while I am sitting at work. I could picture enjoying it while playing cards or a board game or something too. I was not on Barnes & Noble back when The Story came out, but I can assure you that if you're reading this right now and are curious, it is a great album as well. Both are! I am not sure about her very first one, because I've not ever heard it, but I can imagine that it's not too awful bad either. I am going to have to check it out. Anyway people, if you like rock with hints of blues and folk in it, with the occasional ballad or lighter tune mixed in, or if you plain just like female vocalists, give Brandi Carlile a listen sometime. Aside from Brandi's album The Story, below are also other albums that feature some other great female vocalists that you may enjoy too, if you've not ever listened to them.

Brandi Carlile and the Hanseroth twins who accompany her are a band to be reckoned with. If you have ever seen them live then you already know the power that is packed in Carlile. She can croon and yodel, she can do an edgy scream, and she can sing with so much soul it will make you weep. In contrast to her last album which was a little too mellow, this compilation of songs brings back more of the edge she had in her first album. The lyrics are deep and meaningful, catchy and unforgettable. This is a must have cd for those who love genuinely good music. Her track "Caroline" is an upbeat song in which Elton John sings along. This woman is quickly moving her way to to the top.

Brandi Carliles, Giving Up The Ghost, is one of my all time favorite albums in the last year. I have listened to this album more times than I can count. The songs have a country folk sound that is twinged with pop. Brandi has this unique voice that showcases her songwriting and storytelling abilities. Her band members Celloist Josh Neumann, Phil and Tim Hanseroth help make this album unique and memorable. My favorite tracks are Dreams and Dying Day They touch you heart in a soulful way and leave you wanting more. Dreams, has a classic old sound that I remember listening to many years ago. With the help of producer Rick Rubin, this album Giving Up The Ghost is one of Brandis best. I recommend it to any and all ages.

I absolutely love this collection of songs; it's the main thing I am listening to on my iPod right now. She has an amazing voice and it is strong and soulful. She is confident and the songs have a wonderful beat. Pride and Joy is my favorite song. Give it a listen and you will fall in love too, I promise!

I had never heard of Brandi Carlile until a friend gave me her "GiveUp the Ghost" CD to listen to. It struck me right away as very folksy and earthy. It was very unique and unlike anything else I have heard recently. The album has a universal appeal that could be classified in either a country-rock or pop genre. The more I listened to the CD the more I liked it and it soon has become one of my favorite CD's. Brandi has a beautiful voice and her lyrics are very personal and touching. Her songs are easy to relate to. She has a variety of upbeat songs that make you want tap-your-toes and get up and move. She also has some beautiful ballads. One of my favorites is "Caroline" with Elton John singing a duet. I cannot get these songs out of my head and find myself humming and singing them throughout the day. I am very glad that I was introduced to this confident, young artist. I feel we are only beginning to tap into her potential and will be hearing more from her in the future. This is a GREAT addition to your CD collection and I highly recommend it.

Brandi delivers another great performance. Her voice is rich & true. Her lyrics and music meld into a perfect whole. Few artists have been able to release three quality albums in a row. Brandi makes it seem so easy!

Totally blew me away and I can't stop listening to it! I had heard her in concert before, but didn't know what to expect with this new album - very impressed! Her vocals are so strong and yet effortless and there's a depth to the lyrics you don't always see these days. Loved it and will definitely keep a lookout for more from her!

I love this music. I've not ever heard of Brandi Carlile before and I feel like I've been missing out. Her music reminds me Jewel. ( who I'm a huge fan of) . When I listen to her songs I feel like I've jumped into a scene of Grey's Anatomy, where something dramatic is going on or at the end of the episode. I have this album on my Ipod. I love running long distances with it. I forget about the miles and time goes by so much faster. I'm loving it!!

Well, I feel like I have been out of the music loop because I had never heard of Brandi Carlile. I am so glad I was introduced recently. She is not the type of singer I normally listen to but I will definitely be adding a few of her songs to my mp3 player! Especially the softer slower ballads like Touching the Ground. She has some voice at times, the chorus for Pride & Joy reminds me a little of Radiohead and what a cast of characters she has on this album! Impressive! I may have to listen to her earlier albums too!

I have truly enjoyed this album. Prior to owning this, I only owned one song by Brandi and I loved it so I decided to give this a chance. I am glad that I did. I have been listening to the album while I am at the office working late and it makes it feel much more bearable to work 10+ hours a day. I love the mellow soul in her songs. "Touching the Ground" is a great song and one of my favorites. I also like "Dying Day". The whole album is great!

I love Brandi's sound. She presents her wonderfully melodic voice with the pairing of outstanding instrumentation which equals a true listening pleasure. My favorite songs are "Looking Out" and Caroline which she does with Elton John on piano. This entire album is a wonderful treat and has a fresh sound to it. I recommend this album highly.

I have listened to all the songs on the new Brandi Carlile CD , Give Up The Ghost, and it was not what I expected. I have never heard her music before, but had in my mind it would be like Michelle Branch. I was pleasantly surprised. Her songs vary, it seems some lean towards folk, some towards country, and some a litte of both. It is the kind of music I would listen to when I want to have a nice quiet evening at home. maybe dinner alone with the husband, some wine, and just sit back and listen to this CD.

I love this album! Brandi Carlile has a voice that you just want to listen to. The variety of songs on this album really display how incredibly talented she is. When I put this album on, I hit the repeat button and don't skip any tracks. I think it is that good!!

I'm still trying to figure out this album. I received it as a download. A few of the songs are good, but they are all so different sounding. I think theres just too much going on with this Album. Is it folk, country, or rock. It sounds like a combination of all three in one song. As far as Brandi goes, she has a great voice reminds me of a cross between K.D Lang and Sheryl Crow. I just wish she chose one way to go with this album and didn't drag it all over the place. I usually like a good mix of songs, but feel this was way too much. Its not a bad album, just not that great either. I would recommend it if you want a variety of beats and genres.

Amazing!!!! Can't wait to listen to MORE of her music! I enjoyed this album a great deal and actually enjoyed going to her website where she has an older album playing..I let it play for several hours over and hour because it was a great album. I love her sound and will definately be adding her to my music collection and I think this is one artist/group that we should all add!!! I'm not a must watch Grey's Anatomy fan but I did catch it the other night and they featured one of her songs and I was like YES!! Way to go Brandi Carlile. This album also had some other terrific names like Elton John and a couple of band members from Red Hot Chili Peppers working on a few tracks..which was great knowing. I think the album was great with or without knowing that though but it does lead me to believe she is amazing because those people would work with her. She will be one of those greats to add to my list and join the ranks of people like Eva Cassidy. This is also the best price I've found online for many albums!

This is my first album by Brandi Carlile and I love it! I thought it would be more "country" but it really isn't- more acoustic. Lots of songs with catchy tunes- pretty much all accompanied by acoustic guitar. Her voice is amazing and adds a lot to the songs. My husband likes it too.

I pretty much liked every song on this cd, which is unusual for me! She has a very unique & different voice, and once you hear it, you will remember it, in a good way. Her music has been compared to KT Tunstall, The Indigo Girls, & Missy Higgins. To me, she sounds a little like Janis Joplin. Her current cd "Give Up The Ghost" is kind of bluesy, a little country, and a little rock & pop thrown in. Sounds like a smorgasboard, but it really does work. Several songs are pretty catchy, and her music has been played on the tv show Grey's Anatomy, which I think is pretty cool!

I had never heard Brandi Carlile sing before this effort. She has a unique voice, with her tone sounding like a female Johnny Cash with a dash of Elvis thrown in for good measure. I think that perhaps the honesty of this album appealed to me the most. There is no overproduction, just good solid music with clearly understood lyrics.

WOW!!! I loved this CD! Brandi has a velvet voice and has made me a lifelong fan. This was the first time I have heard her music, or at least the first time I heard it and knew it. Her lyrics and soul remind me of Dusti Springfield, I am surprised I haven't heard more about or from her. In today's pop culture of Bubble Gum teen Queens, Brandi is a real honest to goodness talented artist and I am already looking forward to her next album. If you have not yet heard this, I highly recommend you give it a go, and start with "Pride and Joy", you'll love it!!!

We love Brandi Carlile's original music but her first 2 cd's showed her outstanding voice much more than this one did It's very good and I would highly recommend getting it but if you haven't heard any of her other cd's i'd recommend getting the first 2.This girl's got a fantastic voice!

I got this CD for Christmas from my kids. (Note to self: when you have all the other material from an Artist you absolutely enjoy, ask for something else and buy the CD yourself. It is torture waiting for 12/25!) This is one of my favorite albums. Checkout the preview of the audio or her website or youtube videos and you can judge for yourself how awesome she is. (what do they say? "Talking about music is like dancing to architecture" ... I like what I like and you can like what you like). I trudged through a blizzard the other night and saw her in Syracuse,NY and I'll tell was amazingly electric and friendly and 'close' all at the same time. Reminded me of 35 years ago seeing Billy Joel before The Stranger came out, you just know big things are coming her way...
