One chapter in Glaciers, Sea Ice, and Ice Formation is devoted to the Arctic and Antarctica, while an appendix describes significant glaciers and ice shelves. The 2010 earthquake in Haiti, threats to aviation from clouds of volcanic ash and aerosols, and recent changes in the Antarctic make Plate Tectonics, Volcanoes, and Earthquakes a very updated resource. The process of plate tectonics and prior explanations of the dynamic nature of the earth is followed by explanations of volcanism and seismology. Charts and text describe significant volcanoes and earthquakes that have impacted humans throughout history. An explanation of the properties of water and ice precedes discussion of ice in lakes and rivers, permafrost, glaciation, and sea ice. These amazing resources provide much information in one concise resource. This reviewer recommends the books for younger youth as well as high school youth since they are highly readable, with details concerning activities of interest to all ages. Unfortunately, the black-and-white illustrations are not only unexciting but also contribute little to an understanding or appreciation of the phenomena.
