Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
In this absolutely delightful book, the author focuses on the emotions of the young child with color, simplicity and fun. The storyline will give teachers and parents the opportunity to introduce emotions to children in their pre-kindergarten years-the time when the children are still learning how to share, what to do when angry, and how to express joy. The yellows, blues, pinks and purples presented against the black background will keep the attention of the rowdiest group of preschoolers. The book includes masks for the children to wear that can be used without destroying the book. The little monsters from the title explore what it feels like to be glad, sad, scared, angry and funny. This is an excellent read aloud and should be welcomed by every media specialist who struggles to find just the right books for those pre-K classes.
Kirkus Reviews
Children who lack the vocabulary to distinguish the emotions they're feeling may find some comfort in this book, which makes use of masks to unmask feelings. Each spread shows little brightly colored monsters acting out different emotions—pink monsters cut out valentines and bake cookies to express love, yellow monsters play ball and open birthday presents in the name of happiness—while a gatefold page reveals a big mask of whatever emotion is covered in that spread. The eyes and noses are punched out, so children can hold those pages up and "wear" the mask. It's a good idea, but easier in theory; the book is heavy for the young children at whom the book is aimed, and older ones will find it hard to put on the mask, read the book, and keep the pages intact; institutions should expect rips and stock multiple copies. The book has a use, whether teaching the names of emotions, or helping children express them.

    great book!

I teach Pre-K and use this book as a classroom tool for understanding children's emotions. The children are able to express themselves more clearly through the use of the monsters in this book. The pictures are colorful and expressive.

    Very Cute Feelings/Emotions Book

This book is great for discussing emotions with young children. I bought my copy for my preschool class. The masks tear out neatly and can be stored in a folder in the back of the book. They seem sturdy, but can easily rip if children have trouble sharing them. Consider laminating if you want to preserve them, or only have them out for your read aloud and invite children to take turns wearing them. Otherwise have them practice making the emotion faces themselves ;)

    Highly Recommended

Love this book ,and all Ed Emberley illustrations. I am a speech therapist and I ordered this book for some of my clients as a gift. It is great for 2-4 year olds who are just emerging in awareness of their emotions. It provides opportunities for parents to share discussions about emotions. The masks are great. Love this book!!
