Overview

We are none of us what we seem. Or are we? A predatory butler, a promiscuous heir, an intellectual heiress--all living in the Manhattan of the 80’s and all familiar with multidigit incomes, high society, art, the theater, Mozart, and the workings of answering machines. From the outside, they seem to live in a fairy-tale world.
But when it’s springtime in New York City and the boundaries dividing the classes seem to be melting with the last snow, life in the leisure class is anything but simple, and everything is possible, even marriage, even love, even--if you are quick and clever--self-knowledge. This is not Upstairs Downstairs, it’s Upsidedownstairs.
Because when almost anything is possible, almost anything will happen.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Newbery medal-winner and YA writer Voigt has attempted to jump into the adult fiction market. Her novel is a frivolous effort at best, reminiscent of a fluffy Fifties movies, with enough references to steamy sex tossed in to update it. Gregor, the seemingly fortune-hunting butler of playboy Theo, meets and courts shy, diffident, wealthy Alexis secretly. Theo and Alexis's parents are setting up a match between those two, and Gregor doesn't realize that Alexis is Theo's intended. Also, Theo has a yen for someone else. Then there is Theo's sister Sara and her woes with Brad. Typical boys meet girls, boys lose girls, but in the end everybody lives happily ever after--yawn. Oh yes, as an extra fillip, Gregor has a dark secret in his past. All characters seem to be two-dimensional and not very likable. Perhaps for the soap opera set.-- Dawn Anderson, North Richland Hills P.L., Tex.
School Library Journal
YA-- Playboy Theodore Mondleigh decides to marry ``Prune,'' whom he does not love, to please his wealthy parents. His butler, Gregor, falls in love with Alexis. At Theo's engagement dinner, Gregor discovers that Alexis is ``Prune''. YAs will glimpse the lifestyle of the leisure class in New York City as the characters dabble with the trappings of educated affluence. They will relate to Theo's younger sister, who brings further complications. Voigt's credible characterization portrays enough human frailty to make the arrogance tolerable. High school students should enjoy the author's transition from YA to adult fiction.-- Arlene Bathgate, Lee High School, Fairfax County, VA
