Glee: The Music, Vol. 3 Showstoppers [Deluxe Ed.]

All Music Guide - Andrew Leahey
Showstoppers is Glee's fourth record in six months, arriving two weeks after the Madonna EP and one month before the season one finale. That may seem like Glee overload -- and maybe it is -- but for those who love the show, this soundtrack delivers the musical equivalent of what we've come to expect from every episode: some cheesy moments most of them purposely hokey, some slip-ups, and a handful of surprisingly poignant performances. Granted, Showstoppers is a bit heavy on the slip-ups; there's a rather unnecessary version of "Safety Dance," for example, and "I Dreamed a Dream" sounds too close to the Les Miserables original to be anything less than Broadway karaoke.
For every lapse in judgment, though, there's a song like "Lady Is a Tramp" sung with jazzy swagger by Mark Salling, "Hello" an expert duet between former Spring Awakening co-stars Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff, and "One" another duet, this one featuring Cory Monteith's ever-improving vocal chops. And speaking of duets, the Matthew Morrison/Neil Patrick Harris tag-team of "Dream On" is nothing short of ludicrously awesome, assuming your idea of "awesome" involves Dr. Doogie Howser howling high notes with almost medical accuracy. None of this negates the fact that Showstoppers is essentially a cash tie-in, but it's still an entertaining ride, assuming you're willing to have as much fun as the cast. Glee: striking while the iron's hot since 2009. [For the true fanatic, Showstoppers was also released in a 20-track deluxe edition featuring six additional songs.]

    INCREDIABLE VOICES

MY FIRST PURCHASE WAS THE, 'MADONNA' GLEE CD. THIS IS A GROUP OF AMAZING ACTRESSES AND ACTORS AND THEIR VOCALS.I HEARD BONNIE TYLER'S VERSION OF HER SONG FROM THIS CD AND WAS STUNNED!GLEE SHOULD BE ON TELEVISION.FROM THEIR 'CAMPY' ANTICS TO THE SERIOUS SIDE OF BUDDING ADULTS,THIS SHOW AND ITS MUSIC VALIDATES ALL ON GLEE. HIGH SCHOOL REALLY IS LIKE THIS. BAND CLASS. MUSIC. FOOTBALL.A/V SQUADS. ALL COMBINED TO MAKE MUSIC. WHICH BY THE WAY IS THE BEST COMMUNICATOR OF LIFE.MY HUMBLE OPINION.

    more from this reviewer

Great Selections of Classics and New Favorites!

I love the voices of the most of the cast members, and truly believe that this is one of the most original shows on TV, so my review is a more than a bit biased. I was in high school in the 80's, so songs from that era (Total Eclipse of the Heart, Physical, Safety Dance) are my favorites. I love Lea and Jonathon's Total Eclipse of the Heart - probably my favorite on the whole album. The arrangement of Poker Face is wonderful, also. Overall, a great bunch of music to listen to over and over....

    gLee is Back!

I, like my fellow gLeeks, could not wait for the return of gLee! I download my favorite tune from the week's episode as the episode is ending and it is my soundtrack for the drive to work the following morning. This soundtrack encompasses all of the hits this season thus far. Who could resist the urge to bust a move to the glee clubs newest musical acts?! I truly believe that this show is reminding my generation of the great classics created in years past while throwing in a bit of Lady Gaga along the way. I highly recommend this soundtrack to any and a gLeeks. If you haven't been bitten by the gLee bug yet, slip this into your CD drive and fall in love with this year's Emmy winning Comedy/Musical.
