Thomas Knauff is one of the world�s best soaring pilots. He is the first person to fly 750 and 1,000 kilometer triangles in the United States, and the first pilot to fly a 1,000 kilometer flight in a two-place glider. Tom set the world record for a Goal and Return flight of 1,647 kilometers, (more than 1,000 miles) the world�s longest triangular flight of 1,362 kilometers, the World Free Distance record of 1,394 kilometers, and the first person to break the 200 kilometer per hour "barrier" with a 300 kilometer goal and return flight at 201.3 kph.
He is one of the premier flight instructors in the world. He has written numerous articles for Soaring Magazines, authored several books, and conducts many seminars and clinics that have improved the professionalism of all glider flight instructors and pilots. His instructional innovations include the TLAR pattern teaching methods included in this text. The FAA honored him as the Eastern Region Flight Instructor of the Year.
