Overview

Excerpt from Glimpses of England: Social, Political, Literary

These sketches have been selected from a very considerable number of the same sort written by me during a residence in England beginning with the year 1863 and ending with the year 1866.

No attempt is here made at being comprehensive or even systematic. I have chosen such papers as would justify the unpresuming title of the collection, by furnishing glimpses, at least, of a few of those aspects of English life, social, and literary, which the author himself looked at with deep interest while he was himself in the midst of it and felt for himself its strong and ardent pulse. I may add that the most of these papers originally appeared either in "The Nation" or in "The Independent."
