Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Ben Zion Roitberg, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This text is a thorough review of the various aspects of neuro-oncology. It places emphasis on understanding the scientific basis of this discipline, and extensively reviews many experimental therapeutic approaches.
Purpose: The purpose is to track the advances in neuro-oncology and to provide individuals from all the related disciplines with the most thorough understanding of the field. The scope of the text is definitely wide enough, and the subjects are treated in adequate depth to meet the major goal of the editors. Unfortunately, the very multitude of attempted therapeutic modalities is a testimony to their limited success. Nevertheless, every practitioner in the field should be familiar with the experimental treatments, if only to answer patients' and families' questions.
Audience: This book was written for the clinician, the basic scientist, and the allied health provider in the field of neuro-oncology. Residents may find it too detailed and thus will prefer the general textbooks. It can serve as a common base of knowledge for all the providers in the field, and can be read all at once or used as a reference source. The editors are known leaders in neuro-oncology.
Features: This book follows the classic format of logically ordered chapters by eminent authorities in the field. The text covers all the aspects of neuro-oncology. The format is convenient, the print quality is very good, and most chapters are adequately illustrated. With so many contributors, and with subjects subdivided into short chapters, some duplication could not be avoided.
Assessment: This is a wide and thorough text. Much of the information here is already covered in the major textbooks in neurosurgery, but in significantly less detail. This book is most useful for its coverage of the entire field, bringing the specialties under one roof. I feel that it could be useful for any neurosurgeon, since most are frequently involved in the care of a glioma patient. Also, allied health professionals will find this a great store of knowledge and a handy reference. The neurosurgeon or the oncologist specializing in gliomas will probably not find much new information here, and will prefer a review of the current literature.

Journal of the American Medical Association
The Gliomas is a first rate reference and will find its place on many a library shelf. There are other good monographs on the broad subject of brain tumors—Brain Tumors, by Kaye and Laws, comes to mind—but The Gliomas is a unique encyclopedia of this restricted topic. It will be indispensable to neurosurgeons, neuro-oncologists, and brain tumor researchers.
