I always enjoy a good mystery, and this book is a great paranormal mystery. The plot is well thought out, with all the pieces falling into place at the end.
I don't usually read books about the future but this one held my attention. It involves conspiracy theories. It also delves into the prejudices of people against others that are different than themselves.
There is also a nice love story between Wendy and Jake, and the difficulties that they have to overcome.
I also like the surprise ending.

I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review. Susan Monroe has a perfect family and a perfect life. She has two kids and a loving husband. What she doesn’t realize is her content life isn’t quite realistic. Her family is given monthly rations; their supposed happy life has been due to reconditioning. Travis Reynolds, the Chief of Police in New Haven 56, is human. He’s aware that this 50s community he, his wife and daughter live in isn’t realistic. But he makes it is duty to keep this community safe from harm.
This book was The Stepford Wives on super steroids! The biggest decision for the women was what kind of welcome package to bring their new neighbors. This was a fun read for me, lots of unexpected twists to keep you engrossed throughout the novel. My favorite character was Jenna, she was a Glistening bounty hunter, she’d capture them for reconditioning and then they’re placed in a New Haven to begin their new lives. This book had it all, action, suspense and mystery. This is one of the best dystopian novels I’ve read in quite awhile.

Leave it to Beaver on Steroids.
Glistening Haven…it hasn’t been a half hour since I finished this book so, as you can imagine, I’m still wrapped up in its world. It’s a world where Leave It To Beaver meets Dragonslayer. Yep, you read that right. And oh what a world Jill Cooper has weaved!
Pencil skirts, desserts at the ready, “swell” and all that 50s stuff are covering the underlying life of the glistening. Our world, with all its glamour and wants of beauty, has been changed due to the chemicals in the products that reacted with our natural chemistry. Some people’s biology has been changed forever and it happened right before the eyes of the world watching. Now, this is a few years later, the majority of those who are now the glistening, those who are not still in hiding, have been rounded up and given a place to live, conditioned and without the unspoken terms of further conditioning if they revert. What are the glistening? Humans who can change into blood thirsty monsters. Wings, scales, claws, you name it.
Now this story takes you through several different characters, their lives, hopes, dreams, loves, fears, losses, struggles of all kinds, past and uncertain futures. You find yourself connecting with them, hating them, loving them, cheering for them, and saddened with them.
This story drew me in from page one. I couldn’t put it down, and when I had to I found myself thinking about it, dreaming about it (that was a wacked out dream) and dissecting it. It’s not a short read, 410 pages in paperback form, but it’s not a hard read. I love that the author took what could have been 2 books, with an incredible cliffhanger, and kept it at one. I appreciate that she did that, but I still can’t wait to find out more. You meet some incredible characters and also say goodbye to many of them, but you don’t find yourself wondering why because the reasons fit it beautifully with the storyline.
What would I have changed? Nothing. I can honestly say that this has to be one of the few books I’ve ever read that I loved it completely and wholly as it is. Crazy, right? That’s just how well this book is written and why I recommend it to anyone who likes a good thriller without a story that goes overboard on itself.
Do yourself a favor, check out this book, I promise you won’t be let down. After you’ve read it, I’d like to hear what you thought of it.
