Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Annie Laura Smith
How can Allie decide on whether to attend Little Miss Majorette Baton Twirling Twirltacular, where her best friend's sister would be performing, or go to a birthday party of a wealthy acquaintance in a stretch limo? Allie makes the decision to go to the birthday party at the Glitterati, and finds it is not what she expected. Her acquaintance does not appreciate Allie's gift of her favorite book. She is also forced to dress as a pirate rather than choosing her own costume. Allie realizes that supporting a friend is more important than attending a glittering birthday party. She takes matters into her own hands and escapes the disappointing party. Young readers will get the message that you should always be true to your friends through Allie's actions rather than being told to do so. This book is number 5 in the "Allie Finkle's Rules for Girls" series. The other books include: Moving Day, The New Girl, Best Friends, Best Friends and Drama Queens, and Stage Fright. Reviewer: Annie Laura Smith
School Library Journal
Gr 4–6—Allie Finkle can't wait to watch the middle-school Twirltactular baton competition with her new best friends. Unfortunately, Allie's mom promises "that horrible Brittany Hauser's" mom that Allie will attend her ex-friend's birthday sleepover the same weekend. Despite her dislike for Brittany, Allie agrees because she wants to ride in a limo and have glamorous pictures taken at a fancy store called Glitterati. The glitzy fun wears off when Allie argues with Brittany and the other girls, and the ever-resourceful Allie finds a way to go home early. Tara Sands narrates Meg Cabot's novel (Scholastic, 2010), brilliantly capturing Allie's emotional highs and lows. She reads in bubbly, chipper tones that speed up when Allie is excited, and emphasizes words to show Allie's strong feelings. Sands perfectly modulates her voice to portray the different characters. Highly recommended for all public libraries, especially where Cabot's books are popular.—Mary Landrum Lexington Public Library, KY

Her Princess Diaries series has been published in more than thirty-eight countries and was made into two hit films by Disney. Biography

Meg Cabot knows that one of the best cures for feeling gawky and conspicuous is reading about someone who sticks out even more than you do. Her books for young adults invariably feature girls who have extraordinary powers that carry extraordinary burdens. Cabot's Princess Diaries series offers up the secret thoughts of Mia Thermopolis, who discovers at age 14 that she is actually the princess of a small European country. This revelation adds significantly to her extant concerns about crushes, friendships, school, and other matters falling under adolescent scrutiny.

Cabot, a native of Indiana weaned on Judy Blume and Barbara Cartland, was already a successful romance novelist (as Patricia Cabot) before she began writing for young adults; her alter-alter ego, Jenny Carroll, began a new series shortly after The Princess Diaries debuted. The Carroll books are divided between the Mediator series, starring a girl who can communicate with restless ghosts; and the 1-800-WHERE-R-YOU books, in which a girl struck by lightning acquires the ability to locate missing people.

Cabot writes her books in a conspiratorial, first-person style that resonates with her readers. She has obviously kept a grip on the vernacular and the key issues of adolescence; but what makes her books so irresistible is the mixing of the mundane with the fantastic. After all, who wouldn't like to wake up and be a princess all of a sudden, or a seer? Cabot takes such offhand notions and roots them firmly in the details of average, middle-class American life. She has also tiptoed into mystery and paranormal suspense with other YA novels and series installments.

Cabot continues to write adult novels under various permutations of her given name (Meggin Patricia Cabot): from 19th-century historical romances to contemporary chick lit. And, as with her books for teens, these romances have earned praise for their lighthearted humor and well drawn characters.

Good To Know

Some interesting outtakes from our interview with Cabot:

"I am left handed."

"I hate tomatoes of any kind."

"I really wanted to be veterinarian, but I got a 410 on my math SATs."

"Writing used to be my hobby, but now that it's my job, I have no hobby -- except watching TV and laying around the pool reading US Weekly. I have tried many hobbies, such as knitting, Pilates, ballet, yoga, and guitar, but none of them have taken. So I guess I'm stuck with no hobby.

I love The Allie Finkle's Rules for girls Series!

I love Allie Finkles rules for girls because she is just a really unique girl and has her own ways of doing things. I can really relate to what happens in the books because she has troubles with friendships and kids in her class and family issues and everyone in the world could probably really relate to that, I know I can. Meg Cabot the author really targets every day lives of a 9 or 10 year old. Meg really choses the easy stuff and gives helpful tips on problems with other kids, friends, and family and even more things. I would rate it a #1 book in my pick-list because it is a fun and quick read for me and I laugh and smile when I am reading this book. I don't think books wouldn't be fun if they couldn't make you smile or laugh, that's for sure. My mom is even willing to buy the series as long as I enjoy them. I really can't wait 'till the 6th book because I always wonder what will happen next, what will Allie do to fix the problem with her cat or family or at school or even with a friend. It also could even be something different. So all I would say is, Teachers if you want a fun book for the girls in your class to love get Allie Finkle's rules for girls. Parents let your kid get any book they want and if you get them Allie Finkles rules for girls I really think they will love the book as much as I do! Girls please try to read the series I promise you, you will probably be able to relate. So just think about it.
GO BUY ALLIE FINKLE'S RULES FOR GIRLS!!!! I promise you will love it!!
