During his 2005 confirmation hearings for the UN ambassadorship, John Bolton was taken to task for say-ing that nobody would notice the difference if we lost ten stories off the top of the United Nations building. Bolton's opponents criticized his lack of respect for this internationalist shrine adorning the East River skyline of Manhattan.Actually, Ambassador Bolton was being kind. The prob-lem is not just the UN's pervasive corruption, incomp-etence and lack of managerial discipline, which are shocking enough. The real threat the United Nations poses comes from the zealous, globalist ideology that has corrupted its founders' origi-nal intentions. To reverse Bolton's metaphor, these left-wing globalists strive to add even more stories of UN power, using synthetic materials composed of so-called "universal" or "international norms" that they manufacture at a host of unelected global forums. Then, they methodically plot to use our own judicial system to finish their handiwork. They hoodwink sympa-thetic internationalists in our federal judiciary to insinuate their ideology into the judges' interpretation of the U.S. Constitution. The result is to deprive Americans, brick by brick, of every freedom which the Founding Fathers labored to write into the Constitution. As New York Times columnist David Brooks put it, the UN has become the instrument of "elites" and "technocrats" who want to turn the unelected bodies of the UN and related global forums into some sort of "supranational authority." (For the sake of clarity, we'll refer to these elitists throughout as "globalists.") Secretary-General Kofi Annan-and Boutros Boutros-Ghali before him-have actively promoted this ideology, with encouragement from the majority of developing countries who dominate the UN's General Assembly and stand to gain from the world organization's aggrandize-ment at the expense of the United States. Sympathetic world leaders like French President Jacques Chirac, prominent liberal "thought" leaders like Bill Clinton and his Presidential aspirant wife Hillary, and the editorial board of the New York Times all contribute to giving the globalists a prominent platform on the world stage. Copious fund-ing from billionaires such as George Soros and Ted Turner keep the globalist propaganda machine whirling away. The globalists' left-wing, anti-American prosely-tiz-ing is addi-tionally facilitated by the immense resources afforded them by private, unelected and unaccountable advocacy organizations-known as NGOs-including such extremist groups as Amnesty International and Greenpeace. While the UN's past failures and present travails get most of the media attention, the real story lies in the dangerous direction the organization is taking with globalists at the helm. The globalists' tactic: to implement a perverse agenda of economic regulation, extreme environmentalism, and left-wing social norms. Their strategy: to badger and assault the U.S. through foreign media, politicians, UN bureaucrats and NGOs in order to marshal world-wide support for their gauzy, Hallmark-card visions of a supposedly benign and just world government. Their goal: to neuter the United States Constitution and the nation it defines.
