Overview

Along with its companion album, Edge of the World, Planet Buzz brings together some of the best tracks originally presented on the free sampler discs included in each issue of Global Rhythm magazine. All of these tracks represent some kind of fusion of traditional and contemporary sounds, whether it's the gently amped-up bossa nova of the Mosquitos, the Lebanese orchestral jazz of Claude Chalhoub, or the techno-qawwali of Shabaz. There are occasional moments of irritating preciousness: the Parisian ensemble Lo' Jo gets all Edith Piaf on "Au Cabaret Sauvage," and Jane's Addiction frontman and Lollapalooza impresario Perry Farrell is as insufferable as always on the willfully bizarre "To Me," which sounds like it was produced by a kid with a Casio keyboard and too many Lee "Scratch" Perry albums. But these are easily outweighed by the album's many moments of creative brilliance. Between Afro-beat pioneer Tony Allen's wonderful ode to home-cooked food, and DJ Cheb I Sabbah's "Raja Vedalu" -- which is dark and funky like a good party on a humid night near a smelly river -- there is plenty here to keep you happily nodding on the bus or bouncing around your living room.
