School Library Journal
Gr 5-7-These well-organized books should be considered as replacements for aging introductions to these subjects. Double-page chapters introduce topics such as "The atmosphere and the weather" and "What is nuclear power?" through brief paragraphs of information. Numerous colorful photographs, graphs, and diagrams with informative captions add details on each spread. In both titles, the authors present the U.S. refusal to sign the Kyoto Protocol in a neutral tone. Both books include simple experiments to reinforce the concepts presented and boxed, practical suggestions of actions that will help protect the environment. Plenty of white space on each page will lure reluctant readers. These titles will primarily fill requests for report information.-Jean Lowery, Bishop Woods Elementary School, New Haven, CT Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature - Remy Dou
Rising sea levels, bleached corals, and severe weather are among the possible effects of global warming. For years, climatologists have been measuring the levels of atmospheric gases that trap the sun's heat. An increase in the amount of gases can mean an increase in the amount of heat trapped on earth, and that could lead to higher atmosphere and land temperatures. One of these gases, carbon dioxide, has increased faster than normal because civilizations burn fossil fuels that release it into the environment. Oxlade presents this and other evidence that points to human causes for the rise in temperatures across the globe. He uses meaningful photographs to support the informative text. Oxlade also provides a balanced perspective by describing data that point to natural causes for some changes in earth's temperature. Although his manner of presenting balanced facts sometimes leads to confusion, this relatively short book would make a good resource for young people to begin exploring the topic of global warming. A few concepts require familiarity with scientific terms; the glossary helps. A classroom teacher can scaffold many of these concepts. Reviewer: Remy Dou
