Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Midwest Book Review October 2007

“A fine review of what global warming is and how it’s affecting the planet. Where similar books sport a weighty appearance lending to college-level pursuit, this slim paperback offers a more user-friendly presentation and makes it a fine recommendation to both high school and general-interest library collections, especially in light of the numerous color photos throughout.”

KLIATT
This is a wonderful series that features gorgeous and abundant full-color photos accompanied by informative texts by wildlife photographers and naturalists. Beavers, for example, is by a wildlife photographer who has written three previous books on beavers and has even been allowed by the New Jersey Dept. of Fish and Game to keep beavers in captivity for months at a time. He covers the characteristics of the beaver, dam building, seasons in a beaver's life, beavers and man, and suggestions on watching beavers, in succinct, fact-filled prose, accompanied by wonderful photos. Global Warming, by a lecturer at the Department of Geography of London's University College, lucidly defines global warming, provides a brief history, discusses who is producing the pollution, and describes the evidence and the impact, along with providing suggestions for what can be done. Illustrations explain concepts like the cooling factor and the great ocean conveyor belt, and there are striking photos of glaciers, hurricanes, and more. For all libraries. (WorldLife Library series) Category: Nature & Ecology. KLIATT Codes: JSA*—Exceptional book, recommended for junior and senior high school students, advanced students, and adults. 2002, Voyageur Press, 72p. illus. maps. tables. index.,
— Paula Rohrlick; KLIATT
School Library Journal
Adult/High School-Maslin defines and gives a brief overview of the problem, then continues with chapters on the producers of pollution, the evidence and impacts of global warming, and what we can do about it. One chapter describes the devastation that could accompany changes to the Gulf Stream and the Amazon rain forest and/or the release of gas hydrates that "lurk- [b]elow the world's oceans and permafrost." The author states unequivocally that global warming is due, in large part, to human activity. He also maintains that a strong worldwide commitment to reducing greenhouse gases, combined with immediate adaptation mechanisms such as the development of alternative energy sources, will reduce or prevent its worst potential consequences. A short list of recommended readings relies heavily on scientific reports. More than 50 color photos and charts explicate the text.-Dori DeSpain, Fairfax County Public Library, VA Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
