Gr 8-10-- Human activities and attitudes as well as social and political decisions have created our overwhelming environmental problems. That individuals, businesses, and governments are all responsible and must recycle, reduce waste, and develop clean, renewable energy sources is Tesar's unequivocal message. Both books are logically arranged, divided and subdivided, making for easy reference. Case studies and detailed scientific information are provided in separate gray sidebars that do not interfere with the flow of the text. Black-and-white photographs and diagrams clearly illustrate the written material. Each volume has a section of full-color, captioned photographs that summarize each topic. Although the controversies over Global Warming are discussed, the author takes the view that it is definitely occurring through the excessive use of fossil fuels. There are some minor errors. Although differing little in content and format from other such titles, these books emphasize the urgency of the problems and the possibility of solutions. They update Gay's Greenhouse Effect (Watts, 1986) and Pringle's Throwing Things Away (Crowell, 1986). --Meryl Silverstein, American Museum of Natural History, New York City
