Overview

Relive the outstanding hits and misses as the boys of summer clashed over the fall championship. In this remarkable sports anthology-by one of the nation's best-known sports authors-you'll thrill to stories that bring the best of the World Series home to you.

Great moments include: the only perfect game in World Series history, pitched by Don Larsen in 1956; Willie Mays's incredible over-the-shoulder catch against the Cleveland Indians in 1954; Carlton Fisk's series-tying 12th-inning home run that capped one of the most memorable games in World Series history; Babe Ruth's called shot in the 1932 World Series; Bill Mazeroski's 9th-inning homer run that won the 1960 World Series for the Pittsburgh Pirates, one of the most cited achievements in World Series history; the ground ball that eluded Bill Buckner and gave the New York Mets a second chance in the 1986 World Series; Joe Carter's walk-off, series-winning home run off the Phillies in 1993, and more.

Some of the best sportswriters ever to put pen to paper capture the thrills: Roger Angell, Peter Gammons, Robert Creamer, Stephen Jay Gould, and David Halberstam, among others.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
A prolific author, Golenbock (Dynasty: The New York Yankees, 19491964) is well known for his "in the stands as a fan"—style of description of the lives of the legends and legendary moments of baseball. As an editor here, he has picked articles and book excerpts from an all star-cast of writers such as Roger Kahn, Stephen King, Roger Angell, Stephen Jay Gould, and David Halberstam, to mention only a few, offering interested readers hours of pleasure as they relive Jackie Robinson's 1955 steal of home against Yogi Berra, Casey Stengel's frenetic inside-the-park home run against the Yankees in 1923, and Reggie Jackson's magical three swings, three home runs in 1977.Verdict Little is missing in this elegant and comprehensive compilation, although Golenbock's own introductory pages contain a few misattributions as to names and dates, facts that should have been within his grasp. Nonetheless, this fills a hole in this field of baseball writing, and no public library or baseball fan will wish to be without these vivid narratives.—Gilles Renaud, Cornwall, Ont.
