Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
The Caldecott Medalist makes wonderful use of innovative production techniques in this ingenious offering. Differently diecut and boldly colored pages reveal increasingly scary features of a big green monster--on the first spread, we see two big yellow eyes; on the second, the eyes plus a long blue nose; and so on, until the monster is fully unmasked. But that's only half the story. ``You don't scare me!'' reads the caption after the monster is shown in all its horror. Turn more pages and, one by one, the scary features disappear, as does, of course, the monster. ``And don't come back! Until I say so,'' the text concludes. A joy to read aloud, the simple story entertains even as it helps its audience master common fears. Emberley's striking approach should win him new fans aplenty. Ages 3-8. (Apr.)
Publishers Weekly
Die-cut holes in the cover reveal the "two big yellow eyes" of the title hobgoblin in Go Away, Big Green Monster! by Ed Emberley (first published in 1992). The sturdy laminated pages that follow also have die-cuts that show the monster's fleshy "long bluish-greenish nose," "a big red mouth with sharp white teeth" and more. But the text gives readers the confidence ("You don't scare me!") to take away its scary features with each succeeding page turn until he's gone-"and don't come back! Until I say so." A fun way to conquer fears. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
School Library Journal
PreS-- A graphic delight. In the tradition of Lois Ehlert's Color Zoo (1989) and Color Farm (1990, both HarperCollins), this is a clever series of die-cut pages that lets children construct and then deconstruct a big green monster. The book starts with a black page, and two round eyes gleaming through the text. ``Big Green Monster has two big yellow eyes.'' Each page adds a new adjective-laden element, including a ``long bluish-greenish nose'' and ``scraggy purple hair'' until the culmination of effects prompts a response of, ``YOU DON'T SCARE ME! SO GO AWAY . . . .'' Each subsequent page subtracts one of the scary pieces until the last page is entirely black, featuring the words, ``and DON'T COME BACK! Until I say so.'' This imaginative original work is a most friendly way in which children can take control over their own ``monsters'' or nightmares. It also has great visual appeal because of the bold interplay between shape and color. --Elizabeth Hanson, Chicago Public Library
Carolyn Phelan
For a younger audience than Bradbury's "Switch on the Night" (also reviewed in this issue), this striking picture book takes a hands-on approach to dealing with nighttime fears. In fact, it may be hard for parents to pry their kids' hands "off" the book and get them to bed. Using die-cut, black pages, the book begins with the monster's "two big yellow eyes" glowing through round holes. Each flip of a page displays more features shining in electric colors through new holes--"a long blue nose / a big red mouth with sharp white teeth / two little squiggly ears . . . ," and so on--until the narrator announces, "You don't scare me! So GO AWAY scraggly purple hair . . . ," and dismisses the monster page by page, feature by feature, like the departing Cheshire Cat. In the last half of the book, the monster appears on pages in the same vibrant colors that showed through the cuts in the black pages. Graphically playful and exciting, this picture book promises to jazz up any story time and to give individual children a measure of control over at least "one" monster.

    The Kids Love This Book!

I work in a preschool, and the kids simply go crazy when we read it. They love the pictures, and shouting 'Go Away' when the time comes in the story.

    Instant Favorite

My son wanted to read it right away. He wanted it again and again. The same day, he read it back to us with character. His most requested book to date, this playful and interactive book gives children control over how much, or how little, 'big scary green monster' a child wants to see.

I have a one year old boy. He loves this book. He reads along by growling and grunting for every page. We love to read it to him.

    LOVE THIS BOOK...

My 3-year old son absolutely loves this book! He 'reads' the entire thing now and looks at it over and over again, giggling the whole time. This is my fourth time buying this book as a birthday present for a nephew. From what I hear, this has become a favorite for each person we've given it to as well.

Great Book to Help Your Child Conquer His/Her Fears

I bought this book for my 2 1/2 year old daughter. At first, she was scared of it. But later on she began to love it especially the last page where I read: "Go away big green monster! And don't come back until I say so." She always gets a good laugh out of it. She now asks me to read this book to her every night. Just earlier tonight, she was using the cut-out holes on the cover of the book to pretend that she was the monster and was trying to scare me. And every time I pretended to be scared, she would laugh! We took turns "scaring" each other and had a good laugh about it. Definitely a good book to read to your kids, you'll both enjoy it!

Highly recommend for 3 year old!

Bought this for my 3 1/2 year old grandson after we had borrowed the library version. He loves the pictures & has almost memorized all the words. Great for encouraging a love of books & "reading". Also reinforces learning colors & shapes. His 17 month old sister loves it too. Only problem is that they fight over it.

    Silly fun!

I really enjoyed reading this book to my 3 year old son at Barnes and Noble. We wound up choosing this book to buy from a whole bunch we browsed through. We read this book frequently and am still amused by the silly pictures.

    Great for Preschoolers

This text is simple, allowing even young children or developmentally delayed preschoolers to join in. As the monster disappears, the child feels empowered. Buy the puppet and it will further enhance this story.
You can find it at Lakeshore Teachers Store. Both will make a wonderful gift for any preschooler.

A great book to get kids into reading!

We bought this book for our three sons, they loved it from the start. It is the book that got our 5 year old interested in learning how to read himself. Every time we read we had to go over each word and tell him what it was a few times. It wasn't long and he knew the whole book and was reading it to us.

A book both you and your child will enjoy

This book is great. When I worked in daycare this was a book the kids often chose to have read to them and to read by themselves. Now I'm home with my own kids, and I got this book for us. My son LOVES it. My husband likes it too and to tell you the truth, he's the picky one. This book is creative with its illustrations and colors. It's a must have in my humble opinion.
