Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The attractive cover on this board book should entice toddlers to open it up. The images of various vehicles are raised on the surface and either printed in white on a colored background or in color on the white cover background. There is quite a variety of vehicles from those powered by humans like a scooter to those that are run by big engines like the bus, airplane and truck. In the middle of the book there is a stop light, so this might be a good opportunity to stop and talk about its function and what the various colors mean. The page with the signs is not necessarily clear to this reviewer—some such as the bicycle and bus indicate a path or bus stop. Some of the other signs may require research and there is no text to help the adult. The inclusion of a blimp seems a bit unusual since there are not that many of them in use. Even in this country, they are seen mainly at sporting events. Not necessarily a first purchase to introduce "things that go." Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot

Part of a recently launched line of books created by a home furnishings design company, this sleek board book explores modes of transportation, using crisp, high-contrast graphics. Taking a cue from street signs (there’s even a page with traffic symbols), images of vehicles like a scooter and truck are pared down to their basic, geometric components. The images are raised for a satisfying tactile effect, while the modish color combinations, like mint green and orange, add to a fresh, kinetic feel. Also available: Eat. Up to age 2. (Mar.)
