Children's Literature - Justina Engebretson
Playing for United has been Josh's and his best friend Aidan's dream, and now they cannot believe that they have both successfully made it on United's roster. Getting to play with some of the best soccer players around will take their game to the next level. However, the boys quickly learn it takes more than great players to win games; it takes a team. After several losses, Josh is starting to think it would be more fun to play with his old team, but a school research assignment might just provide him with the key to United's success. A part of the "Fred Bowen Sports Story" series, this middle reader emphasizes the importance of teamwork and group unity. It also teaches the valuable lesson that how the game is played is more important than the win. Short and predictable, this book lacks depth of plot and character development; however, young soccer fans and boys may still enjoy this read. Reviewer: Justina Engebretson

Josh and Aidan are excited to be selected for the United, an elite soccer team.  Their enthusiam fades as the team just can't seem to win a game.  While researching a project for school, Josh learns about a group of women who formed the 1999 U.S. World Cup team and how they had group-building exercises that seemed to help them on the field.  Teammates criticize Josh when his coach agrees to try a few of the exercises.  Will the team benefit?  Can the players finally begin pulling together as a cohesive unit?  Young soccer fans will enjoy the book, as will teens who are struggling with the English language.  A decent hi-lo book.
