Editorial Reviews

VOYA
These short yet informative biographies cover eight leading female pop music stars, from Britney Spears to Shania Twain. This easy-to-read collection tells the story of each star's rise to fame and of the moxie that got her there. As the title suggests, this celebration of strong women who have beaten the odds and attained their dreams describes women who are filled with positive character traits and are deserving of the fame they enjoy, regardless of what the tabloids say. Mariah Carey is "charismatic and fiery," and Brandy is "grounded and sincere." Although each biography covers only ten to twelve pages of large type, they answer all the important questions—the who, what, where, when, and why that students need for homework assignments. It is not likely that many teens will choose this book for leisure reading. Older teens will yearn for more information and insight, and younger teens will want more of the Bop-type paperbacks, full of pictures and favorite foods. Nevertheless this book would be a good addition to both school and public libraries and would be perfect for projects on popular or current topics when there never seem to be enough books. One might question the inclusion of Selena and Bjork and wonder about the glaring omissions of Christina Aguilera and Jewel, but this book is still a worthy choice for a collection lacking biographies of current pop stars.
