Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carlee Hallman
Owen washes his hands with soap and water before he eats, while his mother serves a green salad. Later, his dad clips Owen's fingernails. Owen takes a bath and washes his hair. He washes his face in the morning and brushes his teeth. He puts on clean clothes. He sneezes into a tissue. Every six weeks, he gets a hair cut. In summer, after playing outside barefoot, Owen washes his feet. Two simple sentences of text appear per two-page spread. A framed note gives further information such as: "Part of keeping clean is wearing clean clothes. Dirty clothes can make your body dirty, too." The bright ink-and-watercolor illustrations show an African-American family. A little brown dog accompanies Owen throughout the text. This is part of the "How to Be Healthy!" series. A list of other books, a web site address, and a short index are included. Reviewer: Carlee Hallman

PreS-Gr 1

Each volume has an introduction composed of a few brief sentences about how the featured activity is important to overall health. The scenes that follow are from the daily lives of a diverse group of children who show how simple it is to develop good habits and make healthy choices. For example, Juana and Maria walk to school, join sports, and stay active through play. Smaller text boxes on each page provide additional tips and give the books a little more mileage in terms of target audience. The watercolor illustrations of the perpetually smiling children directly match the narratives, letting readers make the correlation between fun and healthy.

Growing up in a small town with no cable (and parents who were teachers), reading was the only thing to do. Since then, Christianne Jones has read about a bazillion books and written more than 50. Christianne works as an editor and lives in Minnesota with her husband and three daughters.
