Not dull........"devotional"

I don't agree with the "dull" review posted by JesusButterfly. I also find it unlikely that any one of the athletes in this book would claim their faith to be ¿perfect¿. Though, it isn't necessarily a book to read from cover to cover in one sitting. I purchased the book as a gift for my daughter as soon as I saw it advertised in Splash magazine. She immediately jumped into it, looked at all the photos then picked a chapter to read. We have both used this book more as a devotional. When used that way, it is anything but dull. My daughter has taken the book to swim practice and written many of the quotes on the board to help motivate the rest of her team.

Though we have enjoyed many athletes¿ stories, there is one that really touched our lives. My daughter had a friendship that went from being the only girl for months to extend friendship to being inseparable best friends and then ignored with a rallying of other girls against her. As my daughters times dropped the friendship became non-existent. Through it all we continued our expectation of our daughter to be supportive and encouraging to everyone on the team. Looking through ¿The Goal and the Glory" I found chapter 22 titled "Friendships are Golden". I read it with my daughter and immediately it brought her peace. I could see it come over her as we read through the two page story.

My daughter asked me to share the message with her coach. Her coach held a team meeting and read it to the group. She took the opportunity to express to the swimmers the importance of respect towards friends, team mates and everyone you come across ¿ regardless who is better at swimming or whatever it is in life. It was no surprise that the point was missed entirely by the intended swimmer. But, the validation that my daughter received from her coach was golden!

Thank you, John Naber, for sharing your story. Although my daughter is only 11 your story was "life-changing" for her and it will stay with her in and out of swimming situations. Thank you to Josh Davis for compiling the stories of elite Christian athletes.

At the same time I also purchased a second copy of the book and sent it to my nephew. He is an elite colligate athlete that is proudly a Christian. He promptly thanked me for the book, but said "its finals so I won't have time to read it for a while but I want to". My reply to him was to say the beauty of the book is that it can be picked up and just read a short chapter at a time. It's like being moved to open the Bible and just read where you open it. This past Christmas we purchased three more copies of the book for our daughters coaches.

Inspirational and motivating, not dull!

    Dull book....

It was a dull book really. He used to many of the same people, with people who are rather perfect in their faith. Dissapointing reading...
