Children's Literature - Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
While Farmer Dougal sleeps, the animals on his farm have fun making believe they are driving his tractor. Sheep is first to climb on board, using his BA-AA-AA for the sound of turning the engine on. Cat asks to go along, his PURR making the engine sound. Turkey wants to add his GOBBLE to the sound of the driving. Sheep is concerned about waking Farmer Dougal, but they beg until he agrees to let them take a "ride." Soon Mouse wants to add the squeak of the wheels, Goose the HONK of the horn, and Cow the MOO as the tractor speeds along. A double foldout is needed as each adds to the noise. This unfortunately wakes Farmer Dougal. All the animals scatter at once. But when all seems well and the farmer goes back to bed, they are all eager to "do it again!" This animal fantasy of fun is set in a quasi-naturalistic landscape dominated by the big red tractor. The animals are all cute enough to model for toys, cuddly, with button eyes. The sounds they make are printed extra-large to simulate the actual noises, most likely to encourage youngsters to vocalize along, for a jolly read-aloud. Reviewer: Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
Kirkus Reviews
In this lackluster new picture book, young readers are introduced to the noises of popular farm animals, though they may find themselves confused. A group of farm animals comes together to have some fun while Farmer Dougal is still sound asleep. The sheep decides to take the farmer's tractor out for an imaginary spin, and all the animals join in the mischief. "This is the sound a tractor makes when you turn the engine on..." says the Sheep. "BA-AA-A-A-A-A." The cow says, "I can do the engine when the tractor goes fast...MOOOOOOOO." This may leave young children a bit baffled, as they know perfectly well that the engine of a tractor doesn't much sound like a sheep or a cow. The illustrations are typical of Alborough's work, and his portrayal of the farm and its inhabitants possesses a fitting simplicity and warmth. Young children are sure to be drawn to the genial animals and vibrant farmland, but without much of a plot to engage with, it may be difficult for them to take much away. (Picture book. 2-6)
