More About This Book

Overview

After barely surviving an adventure he never wanted, the scrawny little nearsighted goblin called Jig is now known as Jig Dragonslayer, and has the power of healing, thanks to the forgotten god he worships. But being a hero isn't all it's cracked up to be. Not when the goblin leader wants him dead, and everyone else actually expects him to keep doing heroic-and incredibly dangerous-things.

    More Jig! More Jig!

The second book in the riotously funny Goblin Adventure series by Jim C. Hines lives up to the first, though not in the way I expected... While I enjoyed Goblin Hero, Jig doesn't receive as much attention he did in book one. Instead, Goblin Hero splits its time between Jig and Veka, a would-be goblin sorceress. Yes, Veka is more amusing in her own way. She is more ridiculous, more absurd, and ultimately more goblin-like. But she has few, if any, redeeming qualities 'like I said, she's more goblin-like', and she isn't enough of an underdog to win my sympathy. She just didn't capture my heart the way Jig did. Still, I laughed throughout the book, and I am still in literary love with Jig, who showed up just enough to satisfy my cravings for a Jig fix. Jig is one of my favorite characters in any fantasy novel, and I'd hate to miss a story that included his reluctant hero antics. Goblin Hero also introduces Braf, a worthy companion for Jig's goblin intelligence, and Grell, the cantankerous goblin nanny who's dealt with more than enough goblin babies for a hundred lifetimes. These two round out Jig's party nicely, and Slash the hobgoblin makes another great addition to this hilarious band of misfits. I hope to see Braf and Slash join up with Jig again... If you haven't already read Jim C. Hines, start with Goblin Quest and then pick up Goblin Hero. I give them both the EM Sky Frappucino Award: light and sweet for a fantasy romp of a good time.

    Goblin Hero

Jig didn¿t want to be a hero. He wanted to be left alone, forgotten and ignored. He wasn¿t brave, he wasn¿t an adventurer, he was a goblin and like most goblins, he was a coward. But life wasn¿t that simple for Jig Dragonslayer. The goblin¿s new chief wanted him dead, Veka, a goblin obsessed with becoming a wizard, wanted him to teach her magic, and worst of all, a ogre wants his help. So once again, Jig has to travel to the heart of the mountain, all the way down to ogre territory and put his skinny neck on the line, all because he is, against his will, a hero. And what could be worse than facing an ancient, evil dragon, two evil wizards and a horde of giants bats? That¿s pixies. Exiled from their home, pixies have taken over the mountain, enslaved the ogres and are killing off anything that gets in their way. And now, thanks to one of the few free ogres left, Jig Dragonslayer is in their way. And now, with the help of two goblin sidekicks, both with orders to kill him, Vaka the wizard wannabe that causes more trouble for Jig than she helps, and Slash, a hobgoblin that would just as soon see all the goblins dead in one of his traps, Jig is forced, one again, to become the hero he knows he isn¿t. This book was as good, if not better than the first and it hinted very strongly at a third to come.

    Excellent fantasy

The mountain is riddled with tunnels created by magic that go anywhere and everywhere and are home goblins, hobgoblins, and ogres. Before his adventures with Straum the dragon and the Necromancer, Jig the Goblin was the runt of the litter, picked on by everyone and considered the weakest of the weak. That was then now he is called Jig the Dragonslayer and has the power to heal which makes him valuable to his species. --- The Goblin leader Kralk wants Jig dead by stealth means so she asks for the Goblin¿s help. Something magical is killing the Ogres and they are hepeless to prevent it. Kralk sends Jig, moronic Brof, and Grell the oldest to confront the culprit. As they begin their quest they meet Veko, a wannabe wizard, who begs to join their mission. They soon find pixies from another realm whose queen plans to take over the entire mountain unless Jig and company can find a way to defeat a seemingly invincible foe. --- Jim C. Hines has an uncanny ability to make his magical species co-existing inside a mountain seem plausible including residing there. With no human in sight, his characters are unique with none more inimitable than Jig. The pixies are alien (odd to use that term when the focus is a goblin) and 200 proof evil as they do cruel things including a painful death to their enemies. The three goblins are quite the heroic trio as they battle adversaries in which Jig seems happiest when cornered and the other two want to run. GOBLIN HERO is a wonderful fantasy quest tale with humor and wit normally missing with the sub-genre¿s normal Tolkien grave save the universe quests. --- Harriet Klausner
