Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Karen Sykeny
The oSpeaker's Corner Bookso series covers some of the most controversial issues concerning America, including environmental preservation, health care, and social security. In former Colorado governor and presidential candidate Hart's God and Caesar in America, the issue of religion, specifically the evangelical Christianity that is sweeping America, is discussed, including the dangers of medieval and ancient theocracy. As Hart's title suggests, he argues that leaders can hold any religious belief, but that it should not manipulate them for political gain and that God and Caesar must remain separate for a democracy to flourish. In the individual issue books in the series, "key point" highlights, author backgrounds, and introductions stating why and how the information is pertinent to America are included. Each author, regardless of personal politics, tries his or her best to remain neutral and to discuss with critical research and debate the issue thoughtfully. This series, which also offers titles on health care, ethics, biodiesel fuel and the family farm, and gun violence, among other topics, would be a good purchase for higher education academic libraries and high school libraries. Larger public libraries that wish to expand critical thinking or to debate topic collections should also consider the series. Excluding the essential Think for Yourself!, the reading level and historical/political savvy required as background for reading the essays sadly could result in limited readership. This very reason, however, is why such a series is needed. Perhaps it will discharge American apathy and sharpen the American intellect for a deeper look at controversial issues.
