Overview

In God and the New Atheism, a world expert on science and theology gives clear, concise, and compelling answers to the charges against religion laid out in recent best-selling books by Richard Dawkins (The God Delusion), Sam Harris (The End of Faith), and Christopher Hitchens (God Is Not Great). For some, these "new atheists" appear to say extremely well what they believe to be wrong with religion. But, as John Haught shows, the treatment of religion in these books is riddled with logical inconsistencies, shallow misconceptions, and crude generalizations. Can God really be dismissed as a mere delusion? Is faith really the enemy of reason? And does religion really poison everything? God and the New Atheism offers a much-needed antidote to the extremist claims of scientific fundamentalism. This provocative and accessible little book will enable readers to see through the rhetorical fog of this recent phenomenon and come to a clearer understanding of the issues at stake in this crucial debate.

Atheism, even though I might be a Christian, I still believe that science played a big role in earth’s and human’s creation. Through out the book, God and the New Atheism, I found out that there are difference between God and the New Atheism. This book is very well written, it gives both sides of the story and often the points are very well thought of. There are quite a few examples that could support my argument. In chapter 6 of the book, Haught used an example of how people think that if there is God people would be good and without God humans could not be as good. He used an example from Richard Dawkins to say that humans without God would not be good, because God is the “role model” of us, humans. And he went to the other side of the argument and said that sometimes religions have gone bad before. I personally agree with that humans can be good without God, because they would have a more self awareness of why they are here, and why they are here. With that said atheist could be as good or even better than people who believe in God, like Christians. Another example he used to suggested why people believe in God when there is no theology and God Doesn’t exist. Haught said that even though faith is a natural phenomenon, scientists still try to use science to find the ultimate explanation. And if they could find the ultimate explanation that means science would spell the defeat of theology. Haught used two quotes by Sam Harris, one of them reads “ faith is belief without evidence” and the other reads “ faith is what credulity becomes.” Those two quotes meant that faith is something that people think is natural but in reality faith is what some that you want to happen happening in the end. This book gave me a clear understand of the New Atheism and how it could change the world in the future because as time passes by science will improve and there will be a time when we could prove if there is God and faith in our world. Personally I think this book is really interesting and it gives Christians and people who believe in God a different perspective of the New Atheism and how it could effect us. I would recommend this book to every one.
