Overview

"God loved us so much he wanted us to always be with him too. That’s why God knew he’d need to give us Easter.”

As Little Cub celebrates Easter with Papa, Mama, and her brother and sister, she begins to ask her papa questions about this very special day of the year.  Papa lovingly explains God’s plans for his children, while taking Little Cub on a memorable walk through her stunning Arctic world, and he shares how Easter came about in clear, simple terms that even the littlest cubs can understand.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Little Cub and her polar bear family are back, in this Easter-themed addition to the God Gave Us You series. The bear and her father go for a woodland walk as Papa explains the meaning of Easter (“Out of death comes life. That’s how God wants us to see Easter”). The bears’ wintry climate is hardly a typical setting for a discussion of Easter, but the idea of Jesus “whispering” in Little Cub’s heart is evocative and imaginative (“To hear Jesus, it takes a special kind of listening,” her father tells her). Bryant’s predominantly blue-and-white palette is remarkably varied, and underneath Bergren’s simple story about animals lays sophisticated theology about God’s intentions. Ages 3–7. (Jan.)
Kirkus Reviews
Bergren and Bryant attempt to explain Easter to young children in a gentle, nonthreatening manner, with partial success. When Little Cub questions her father about Easter, Papa Bear explains the religious significance of the holiday in various symbolic ways to his cub. He uses familiar things from their world, such as an egg and a fallen tree, to draw parallels with aspects of the Christian story. Papa Bear discusses his close relationships with Jesus and God, encouraging Little Cub to communicate with God on her own. The theme focuses on the renewal of life and the positive aspects of loving God and Jesus. Easter is presented as a celebration of eternal life, but the story skirts the issue of the crucifixion entirely. Some adults will find this an inadequate or even dishonest approach to the Easter story, but others will appreciate the calm and soothing text as a way to begin to understand a difficult subject. Bryant's charming watercolor illustrations of the polar bear family, their cozy home and snowy forest scenes add to the overall mellow effect. Fans of this popular series will find this a rewarding addition to family Easter celebrations. (Religion/picture book. 3-6)

“I love Easter,” Little Cub said.

“Me too,” Papa Bear said. “It’s even better than Christmas.”

“Better than Christmas? Why?”

“Because on Christmas, we celebrate Jesus’ birthday. But on Easter, we remember we get to be with him forever.”

“Forever?”

“Forever. That’s why God gave us Easter.”

"God Gave Us Easter" appears to be a story about the true meaning of Easter, but I feel that it doesn't focus much on the crucifixion/resurrection story. It briefly compares Easter eggs to the empty tomb, but then goes on to talk about Noah's ark and listening to God. The story seems a little hard to follow, and it's not as good as Ms. Bergren's other books.

We received this story as a gift and it was disappointing to say the least. It had potential, but the story itself was incoherent. Where you'd expect child friendly rendition of an Easter story, you instead get random biblical points (Noah and the flood, Lineage stemming from Jesse, etc.) to drive a weak narrative. The illustrations were decent, but not compelling enough to forgive the weak story.

God Gave Us Easter by Lisa Tawn Bergren is another wonderful addition of the lovable God Gave Us Series that parents and children love! Little Cub gets to take a special walk with Papa where she learns about God’s plan for His children as Papa explains why God gave us Easter. This is a great one to read before, during and after Easter!!! I love the aged appropriate text and the sweet art by Laura J. Bryant. I received a free copy of this book from WaterBrook Press in exchange for my honest review. The opinions expressed are totally mine.

The illustrations went perfectly with the story. The story was at the perfect level for my almost 5 year old grandaughter - it was neat to see the questions she came up with during the story. Now she insists we call her Little Club!

Very warm and touching book about our favorite polar bear family. Their love for each other, and their Faith, shine through in a very gentle way.

Reviewed by Alice DiNizo for Readers' Favorite Author Lisa Bergren has created a lovely and in-depth look at Easter with the help of artist Laura Bryant. Papa Polar Bear and little Polar cub go for a walk in their Arctic world after the family's meal. Papa Polar Bear tells of God giving Easter to all to show that He is with us always. As a pine tree falls and its pine cones spread their seeds so that baby trees will grow, so out of death comes life. And so God gave Easter to mankind so that it could be seen that not even death could trap Jesus, the son of God. Papa Bear tells of Biblical events such as the flood that engulfed Noah and his family when people stopped believing in God. Little Polar cub takes all of what her father says seriously and understands that everyone must follow God, stay connected and not be disobedient. A lot for a little bear to absorb and can she do so? "God Gave Us Easter" is another spectacular, well-written book in the series "God Gave Us.." written by Lisa Bergren and illustrated by Laura Bryant for Christian believers. It offers a thoughtful and serious look at Easter that is meaningful and goes way beyond Easter baskets and bunnies. The devout Christian will adore every word in this book. That Papa Polar Bear believably shares his religious knowledge with his little cub is a good example of creative, successful writing for children. No pontification, just nice presentation. I am sure it will be a great purchase for Christian families seeking something for their children beyond Easter baskets and Easter eggs.

By Lisa Tawn Bergren After having read two other books in this series, I had high expectations for this book. I read it with my two year old daughter, who immediately asked to read it again upon completion.  The story was different than I imagined, but it was still good.  The pictures are, as always, very cute.  The text was easy to read. I appreciate the authors willingness to delve into deeper topics in a way that youg children can understand.  I highly recommend this book.
