UPDATE: I still give a high rating to this exhaustive workbook (maybe I should say thorough??). However, upon reading closer, I have noticed that the emails to/from God do not read exactly the same in the workbook as in the book. Don't know if that is intentional, but it could be a tad confusing for side-by-side study. Oh, the message doesn't change, but it reads somewhat different. Not a big deal, but deserves a mention. Not sure why this was done. (Donna) When you see how thorough this workbook is, you will understand why books and workbooks aren't written as one. This workbook is packed, and I do mean packed, with interesting, and sometimes very deep personal questions about God and praying. I cannot imagine the mind that would think up some of these inquiries! I have only browsed the work book, but it is formated just like the book. There are emails to and from God with questions about prayer. I found that I might ask some of these questions, except that I couldn't think of most of them. Whew! Here are what I like so far: 1. I dare you to think of a prayer question you'd ask God that's not in here. 2. There are many supplementary questions that weren't in the original book. (Really helpful.) 3. Workbook is PERFECT for group bible study. You will know prayer when you're done! 4. Author seems very bible-based, and delves into deeper theological truths. 5. Will provide very diverse discussion among those who take it seriously. Here are some things I like less: 1. How come it's much more costly than the book it supplements? 2. NOT light material. This is directed toward serious prayer study. 3. Like the book, Pentecostals will disagree with chapter on tongues. 4. Might be a bit too exhaustive for personal study, unless you have the time. Much more so than Beth Moore, Knowing God, etc. Hopefully there will be a combined discount with the original book. Good? You bet. But somewhat expensive.
I never knew there was so much involved with praying. Like most others I just assumed praying was talking to my heavenly Father, but after reading this book I guess that's like saying a family relationship is just talking to a parent. Here are what I call the 'positives' in 'God, Help Me Pray!': 1. This is very simple to read and understand. 2. I like the email back and forth idea! Makes this really personal. 3. Chapters are short and easy to digest if you think about them awhile. 4. Author really supports with scripture instead of opinion. 5. The last chapter. I never really understood the 'in Jesus name' thing. Here is what I call the 'negatives': 1. I didn't quite understand the 'pray for sure things' chapter, but it made sense. 2. As a full gospel Christian, I disagree that speaking in tongues is not prayer language, but it really made me think. I'm still thinking on this one. 3. I REALLY wish this had a workbook. There is so much here. Maybe later? I have once attended this author's Saturday evening bible class before we moved, and can highly recommend his sincere teaching. I am about to start his 'Joseph' book, and will say already that it's much more complex than this one. So if you think you know everything about praying, think again.
Dr. Parks's God, Help Me Pray! is the most useful manual on prayer that I have read. It is basic enough for a newly born-again Christian, but contains depths from which even a veteran prayer warrior can learn. God, Help Me Pray is thorough, concise, well organized, and above all readable. Dr. Parks avoids lofty theological language to talk to you in terms that a seventh-grader could understand, but that will benefit even the most educated reader. His book discusses all of the major prayers of the Bible and shows how we can benefit from them. He does not leave these prayers in the distant past, but gives us examples and exercises for our everyday life so that we can make these prayers our own. The book emphasizes, not our getting what we want from God, but our becoming what God wants us to be. Clearly, and with excellent examples, Dr. Parks teaches us (1) why prayer should begin with praise of God, (2) why God sometimes answers our prayers with 'No' or 'Wait!' (3) why some prayers are unacceptable to God because of what is requested or the spirit in which it is requested, and (4) what it truly means to pray in Jesus' name. I can wholeheartedly recommend God, Help Me to Pray! both to every believer and to everyone interested learning about Christian life. I believe that anyone who studies this book in a spirit of devotion cannot fail to grow in grace and knowledge of the truth.
