Overview

An anthology of world mysticism with a special focus, this guidebook presents inspired passages from the world’s greatest saints and scriptures which proclaim the truths central to all religions in a poetically distilled and positive form.

They have been chosen for purity of expression, clarity, positive vision, universality, and for a practical immediacy which makes them translatable into daily life.

When we read the words of the inspired passages collected in this book, reflect on them, write them out, memorize them, and meditate on them with profound concentration, they have the capacity to sink deep into our consciousness, alive with the original charge of mystical awareness which first drew them forth.

This book is organized to support various levels of engagement with the carefully chosen selections of transforming pieces.

Meet the Author

Eknath Easwaran, one of the most respected interpreters of mysticism in the modern world, developed his Eight Point Program of meditation and allied living skills for those wanting to lead active, spiritually fulfilling lives in the midst of family, friends, and society. He drew on all major religious traditions to deliver a universal and ever-practical message.

Easwaran’s method of meditation enables ordinary people to translate lofty ideals into their daily lives.

Eknath Easwaran was born in December, 1910, into an ancient matrilineal family in Kerala state, South India.

From a post as Professor of English Literature at the University of Nagpur, he came to the United States on the Fulbright exchange program in 1959. In January 1968, at the University of California, Berkeley, he inaugurated what is believed to be the first academic course on meditation ever offered for credit at a major American university. He taught and wrote until his death in 1999.

Blue Mountain Center of Meditation, which he founded in 1961, carries on his work. His twenty-four books, plus audio and video tapes of his talks, have sold more than two million copies and are translated into twenty-two languages.
