Overview

Phoebe, who recently discovered she's a descendant of Nike (the goddess, not the shoe), is finding that supernatural powers come with a crazy learning curve. Her stepfather, headmaster of the Academy for descendants of the Greek gods, has enrolled her at Dynamotheos Development Camp-aka Goddess Boot Camp-with a bunch of ten-year-olds for the summer. Embarrassing as that is, hopefully it-ll help her gain control over her powers in time to pass the test of the gods, continue training hard enough to qualify for the Pythian Games, and enjoy her godly boyfriend, Griffin, all while avoiding the ultimate mistake of accidentally misusing powers.

It's another fast-paced myth-inspired heroine's quest that's sure to bring out the goddess in anyone.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up–In this sequel to Oh. My. Gods. (Dutton, 2008), Phoebe, a descendant of the Greek Goddess Nike, is sent to Goddess Boot Camp by her stepfather so that she can learn to control her magical powers, on which she will be tested. But Phoebe is in training for a marathon in the Pythian Games, her boyfriend may be cheating on her, and the other girls at camp are about 10 years old. Add the fact that her evil stepsister is a counselor, and life is worse than it might be in Hades. Phoebe’s inner thoughts and emotions are conveyed well, and readers will feel for her. The plot has many twists and turns and moves along nicely, and there are beautiful descriptions of the Greek islands. However, the novel falls short in the last few chapters, which wrap up the several plot threads too neatly and have a disappointing resolution. Nevertheless, those who enjoyed the first book will want to read this one.–Jennifer-Lynn Draper, Children’s Literature Consultant, Oshawa, Ontario
Kirkus Reviews
Phoebe has recently learned that she is a descendent of the goddess Nike, but as amazing as that sounds, it is also a huge responsibility. She must master her newfound powers or risk the wrath of the gods-literally. Her new stepfather enrolls her in Dynamotheos Development Camp, also known as Goddess Boot Camp, for the summer. While trying to avoid being thrown into Hades, Phoebe is also training to run the marathon at the Pythian Games and working to keep her romance with Griffin from imploding. This sequel to Oh. My. Gods. (2008) is as fun and fast-paced as the first installment. Even though Phoebe is dealing with drama of mythic proportions, her insecurity in her relationships and her conflicts with friends and enemies alike make her a realistic and empathetic heroine. Flat secondary characters and predictable plot twists only minimally detract from the light and clever story line, which, although clearly begging comparison to Percy Jackson, makes for ideal beach reading. (Fantasy. 12 & up)

    Cute

I finished Goddess Boot Camp is an hour. It's good for anyone looking for a fun, easy read with action, drama, romance and adventure! Phoebe has good sense of humor and I was sad to see the story end. Xander was probably my fav character in the second book. Hope Tera writes another one!

    Cute book!

I loved watching Phoebe grow as a goddess. And, Stella's study guide was very helpful for us non-goddesses.

Thanks for a great book to read by the pool.

Pheobe's having problems controlling her magical powers. Often, what she's thinking transforms in her everyday life.

The gods aren't happy. She's scared they'll kill her on the spot (after what happened with her father).

Damian enrolled her in Goddess Boot Camp before heading on his honeymoon. He forgot to tell her the average age of the campers before he left. Now, Pheobe's desperately trying to keep her powers under control in front of a bunch of 10-year-olds.

She's also worried about passing a test from the gods, a possible cheating boyfriend, and her snarky stepsister.

The addition of Pheobe's powers to the story adds humor as she struggles to control them. The sequel to OH. MY. GODS. continues its delightful magical, mythological tale.

    Eh....

I found this book funny and witty, but the ending was really dissapointing and cheesy and dragged it down 2 stars. To my dissapointment, the ending was not the only part that was cheesy. However, other than that this book good.

    I Also Recommend:

    Almost like Percy Jackson

This is a very quick read. I used it for a report and it turned out great. Between phoebe's test drama and Griffin it all ties in great. Be warned that there are a few unanswered questions! This is an easy book but the content is probably for 5th grade plus. I read it when I was going into 6th grade. I loved this book. Girls who like Percy Jackson make way for Phoebe Castro.

    OMTERRIBLE!

You knwo what, tera lynn childs should have never made a sequel. The writing was ok and so were the charecters but i needed more of a connection between Griffin and Phoebe. I really never liked Griffin and I think that they should break up. By the way, where the heck was the GOOD plot? I knew there was one but the note that said something like "Urian will never know who I am in time" or something should have been left out. I hatd that part! It should hav been more sercretive and chilling like
"Come to me your confidant will not figure out what my identity is. You do not have to come, but if you love your dad you will see me midnight on Tuesday.

Goddess Boot Camp by Tera Lynn Childs Review

Much like the 1st book (Oh.My.Gods.) in this series, Goddess Boot Camp was a very light and fun read. All the key components that make this series great were back and in full effect. The cool cast of characters (who ended up revealing much more of themselves) were still fantastic, we got more of the mythology, and some new twists and turns were thrown into the mix that I definitely did not see coming at all!

Tera Lynn Childs seems to have a knack for creating realistic scenarios in very unrealistic settings, such as a school full of mythological descendants (please don't smote me.) She's creative and entertaining and her writing flows effortlessly over the pages. I have a hard time keeping track of how quickly I'm flying through Childs' books and by the time I glance down at the page number I usually find myself further along than I thought.

We get more of the sweet romance that I was a huge fan of in Oh.My.Gods., although it's not always going smoothly, and Phoebe's friends are all back for more laughs. We're even introduced to some new characters that provided added depth to the current story. I was personally a fan of the addition of Urian...he managed to hit my funny bone more than once.

I don't want to reveal any spoilers for readers who haven't read the 1st book, but readers will enjoy the ride alongside Phoebe and her friends (and enemies?) as she's faced with new experiences, problems and of course obstacles she must overcome. Goddess Boot Camp was just as fun as it's predecessor and I've got my fingers crossed that this isn't goodbye for good, I'd like to see more of these characters in the future!

Because she's racing and pacing and plotting the course...

goddess boot camp carries on with the tradition of fluffy cuteness in oh. my. gods., dangling Greek mythology in front of me but it still dangles from afar. No high school frivolities that I love so much; instead, this takes place during summer break with fewer character appearances. The core group is present, but we barely see Phoebe's friends as we do her enemies (or not-so-favorite people). Can I mention that I cried like a silly schoolgirl when Griffin and Phoebe duked it out? :( I hate misunderstandings! They suck!

I thought it was interesting to read about the different godly powers that Phoebe had to master and how exactly these were executed to test her skills. The boot camp final skills test was a little hard to follow at times, but it was okay as far as tests can go for main characters. :) Especially since goddess boot camp does not promise anything but cuteness!

I wish there had been a tiny bit more story with Phoebe's father - goddess boot camp definitely opens a whole new can of worms in regards to this, but the ending totally leaves you hanging! It makes me wonder, if there is a 3rd book, if the impossible could happen. Then again, this is more fluffy than serious and the impossible would fall under the not-so-cute but it may make the series even more mythologically amazing!
