Library Journal
DC's attempt at revitalizing and simplifying its line following the mid-1980s series Crisis on Infinite Earths was not, in hindsight, an unqualified success--but the character who benefited most from the revamp was the industry's best-known superheroine: Wonder Woman. Artist and plotter Perez (New Teen Titans), with scripters Greg Potter and Len Wein, returned the long-running comic to its roots in Greek myth and made Wonder Woman a compelling figure. This first volume (of four planned) reprinting their fondly remembered stories relates the origin and history of the Amazons, created by the goddesses of Olympus to guide humanity. It tells how Princess Diana was born of clay miraculously given life by the gods, became the Amazons' greatest champion, and was sent into "man's world" to save humans and gods alike from destruction at the hands of Ares, the god of war. Perez's meticulous pencils, inked by Bruce Patterson, render the realistic figures and the Escher-esque architecture of Olympus with amazing and impressive detail. These are arguably some of the best Wonder Woman comics ever; recommended for all libraries, for teens and adults. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
