Chapter One

January 1

Today's Promise

I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns. -Philippians 1:6

Today's Thought

You harvest what you plant. Pumpkin seeds produce pumpkins. Sunflower seeds produce sunflowers. That is why you must ask the Lord to plant a clean heart in you so your life will produce clean thoughts, actions, and motives. If you have wrong desires and thoughts, it is evidence that some bad seeds were planted, and you need to do some weeding. Complete renewal cannot be accomplished yet because none of us will be entirely pure in this life. But developing purity of mind and heart is one of the most worthy goals you can pursue this year. What might you look like a year from now-inside and outside-if you accomplished that goal?

Today's Plan

What small seeds of godliness can you plant today?

January 2

Today's Promise

We can make ourplans, but the Lord determines our steps. -Proverbs 16:9

Today's Thought

Goals give you direction. You may have many different goals for the different areas of your life, such as those New Year's resolutions you made. But you should make following God your primary goal. You do not know what the year ahead will bring, but if the Lord determines your steps and you follow him, you can be sure that your life will have purpose in everything you do. Determine never to stray from God, regardless of what life throws at you.

Today's Plan

What would it take for you to follow God more closely each day?

January 3

Today's Promise

He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name. -Psalm 23:3

Even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many. -Mark 10:45

Today's Thought

Jesus sought to please his Father and give glory to him in everything he did. That plan shaped the way he lived each day and the way he served others in every interaction. As you begin each day of this new year, ask yourself two questions: Will my plans for today please God? Will I be serving others today? If you can answer yes to these questions and then follow through with your actions, you will be on the right path-God's path for you. You will know how to spend your time, and you will become more like Jesus.

Today's Plan

How might asking yourself these two questions each day shape your plans?

January 4

Today's Promise

Who are those who fear the Lord? He will show them the path they should choose. -Psalm 25:12

Today's Thought

The Bible says that if you "fear the Lord," he will guide you through life. To fear the Lord means to respect him enough to obey him. When you obey him, you will follow him. And when you follow him, he will lead you to the places and opportunities where you can best serve him and other people. If you want to make good decisions, first decide to obey God. Then you will know that you are going in the right direction with your other decisions.

Today's Plan

Have you decided to obey and follow God? How does that affect the way you make your decisions?

January 5

Today's Promise

Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning. -Lamentations 3:23

Today's Thought

We all long for a new start, a clean slate, a chance to begin again. That's why many people get excited about New Year's resolutions. But every day is a new start when it comes to God's mercy. Every day you can ask forgiveness for your sins, and then he pours his mercy into you, cleaning you from the inside out. When that happens he doesn't see any sin in you. He doesn't see your failures; he sees you as his masterpiece. By God's grace and love you are freed from the burden of sin and failure so that you can start fresh, both in your eyes and his. To lead others to experience true life change, you must embrace God's life-changing mercy.

Today's Plan

Have you experienced God's mercy today?

January 6

Today's Promise

Love the Lord your God and ... keep his commands, decrees, and regulations by walking in his ways. If you do this, you will live and ... the Lord your God will bless you. -Deuteronomy 30:16

Today's Thought

Serving God with your whole life begins with little decisions to serve him. Commit yourself to making daily choices to serve God in the little things. The more you do, the more you will want to obey all of God's commands. A life of obedience is a life committed to daily godly choices.

Today's Plan

What small step of obedience can you take today?

January 7

Today's Promise

What are mere mortals that you should think about them, human beings that you should care for them? Yet you made them only a little lower than God and crowned them with glory and honor. -Psalm 8:4-5

Today's Thought

Deep within every human heart lies the desire for significance. We want our lives to count, to make a difference. Yet many of us carry deep feelings of insignificance. Everywhere we look, we see others who are more successful, more gifted, more this, more that. The Bible promises that your life holds great potential. You are significant-not because of what you can accomplish in this life, but because of what God can accomplish through you that will last for eternity.

Today's Plan

Do you focus on what you can't do or on what God can do through you?

January 8

Today's Promise

The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. -2 Peter 1:8

Today's Thought

Character is what you are, but it is also what you want to become. Ultimately, your character is the mark you make on the world around you. If you are striving for good character-better yet, for godly character-you are working toward moral excellence. Think of all the areas in your life, such as career or hobbies, in which you've worked hard to develop excellence. Doesn't it also make sense to work hard at becoming morally excellent, mastering the things that really matter, such as integrity, kindness, love, and faithfulness? You can do that by asking God to work through you as you relate to others.

Today's Plan

Your reputation, or what other people say about you, is often a good measure of your character. If you could hear others talking about you, what might they be saying?

January 9

Today's Promise

The Lord will work out his plans for my life. -Psalm 138:8

Today's Thought

God's plan for your life is not like a written script that you must follow word for word; it's more like a journey with important destinations and appointments but with a great deal of freedom as to the pace and route of travel. God's plan for you will always have a sense of mystery about it, but you can be certain that as you look for his leading, God will guide and direct you on your journey.

Today's Plan

Do you plan to follow God on your journey through life?

January 10

Today's Promise

"I know the plans I have for you," says the Lord. "They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope." -Jeremiah 29:11

Today's Thought

While it may seem like some things just happen, much of what determines the direction of your life is part of God's plan for you. If everything happens merely by chance, then either there is no God at all, or God is impersonal and detached from the human race. But the Bible says that God is not only real, he is also compassionate and deeply involved in his creation. In fact, he has an eternal plan for all of creation and for you. While you may not understand how certain events in your life fit into God's perfect plan, you can be confident that God is watching over you and guiding you in a specific direction. He opens doors of opportunity, but you must walk through them. Will you follow where he leads?

Today's Plan

How can you recognize the doors of opportunity God opens for you today?
