Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Gault-McNemee, a physician in New Mexico who had been overweight most of her life, developed this unconventional diet "knowing that there really had to be a healthy way to eat good food and feel satisfied." The result of her own struggles and of working with overweight patients in her practice, this book, which she first self-published in 1996, uses as its guideline the motto "If God didn't make it, don't eat it." In other words, we should limit our intake to what we can pick, pluck, scale, or butcher. The book argues that we are slowly killing ourselves by what we eat, especially refined sugar; another section gives case examples from the author's patients showing how effective the diet has been for them. A large part of the book is devoted to recipes; Gault-McNemee also includes lists of allowable foods, forbidden foods, and swing foods--not all good, not all bad, and to be used sparingly. Her presentation is logical, building a convincing case for this lifelong eating plan. For consumer health collections and in public libraries. [Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 9/1/99.]--Mary J. Common sense approach to eating

I was searching for a way to alleviate my severe nasal allergy symptoms and came across this title while surfing through a health-related site. I bought the book not knowing if it would contain information I would find useful. I read the book in one night - it is written in simple language without a bunch of scientific terminology - although the reasoning behind the 'diet' is clearly outlined. This is not a 'diet', rather it is an outline of what types of foods we should be consuming for optimum health. With that objective in mind, it becomes very easy to make the changes knowing that you will probably live longer by eating 'God's Diet'. The main changes are to avoid processed foods - a change I wasn't sure I could make because I was a pasta fanatic. However, because this is not a 'diet', you are never deprived and hunger is a non-issue. I have not missed pasta or cookies (my two greatest food faves) and my allergies (from which I have suffered for about 10 years)have disappeared!!!!! That is the greatest benefit but a great side note is that my clothes are getting looser because I have been eating healthier, more balanced meals. I would highly recommend this book for people who are willing to make lifestyle changes that will probably bring about feelings of greater health and well-being.

    I am a success story

One thing I can say for Dr. Gault's theory is that it works. I was her patient at her clinic in Santa Teresa, NM in 1997. Since that time, I learned something valuable from her teachings and have maintained my ideal weight ever since. Who would think that you could lose weight by eating foods such as: a steak, baked potato (using real butter and sour cream) By eating shredded wheat or grape nuts cereal using whole milk, and the list goes on. I think my saving grace was\ is the potato. (I am a carb freak) It is true! YOU DO LOSE WEIGHT. I recommend this book to those who are tired of the roller coaster rides and are ready to change their life forever. Get ready to love water. (At least 8-8 ounce glasses a day) WATER IS THE KEY! The book has great recipes that a lot of her patients contributed for each other and for her book. Including me! I am ordering this book again to give to, yet another friend I am trying to recruit. While placing the order, I saw that I could share my feelings with the public and I could not resist.

    God would NOT be insulted!

This is an excellent guide for healthful living, so far as eating is concerned. If one were to read the Bible, one would find that God gave mankind dominion over ALL the food sources mentioned in the book; and provided meat, fish and fowl for man's enjoyment and health. Overall, an excellent and helpful presentation of a path to better health.

    The Ungarbled Word on Weight-Control

In a clear, concise, and very readable way, Dr. Dorothy has presented a compelling argument for discarding the complexities and impraciticalities of modern diet regimes, in favor of a far simpler and more logical approach to weight-control. Instead of relying on a rigid program of counting calories and measuring meal portions from certain food groups in specific rotations and sequences, Dr. Dorothy has outlined a simple program based essentially on that practice which has been in use, with only minor variations, from ancient times up to WWII during which time food was obtained primarily by hunting, fishing, and gathering from fields, farms, and ranches. The only processing this food underwent was the various manual operations necessary to prepare it for cooking. Dr. Dorothy admits that her program is not for everyone, but for the very large majority, it will work well with little or no alterations. Another big plus for this program is that the only tools needed to implement it are firstly, a bit of caution; secondly; a lot of common-sense; and lastly, within reasonable limits, a steadfast adherence to the guiding principle which is the motto for this booklet: ¿ If God didn¿t make it___don¿t eat it!¿

    God Would Be Insulted

I don't believe God believes in any form of murder. Therefore, I vehemently object that God would include meat or fish of any kind in 'His' diet. I do agree we should eat simply and choose whole foods - this is an important principle that is extended. But the health of the human race would be vastly improved if we held ALL life sacred. Animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on or exploit in any way!
