Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
You’ve got to love Lucado’s homeboy way of spinning a yarn. Pastor and author of more than 60 books, he uses his signature style in his latest release. The theme is the ordinary. God writes his story by stepping into yours and vice versa. The grand story of human fall and redemption is filled with characters from the Bible and also from real life. We’ve got Joseph and Mary presented as Norm and Norma (because they’re so “normal”) and neighbors such as Holden, Carl, and Aunt Wanda. Lucado is the master of disarming vernacular: Jesus “slam dunks” the devil, and the devil responds by tempting Jesus to “show off in church.” The book could have been a hopeful presentation because Lucado’s narrative voice is so doggone likable. Unfortunately, it is formulaic to a fault: heavy with Bible verses; bloated with anecdotes; and stuffed with redundant rhetorical questions. Lucado himself captures the feeling this book will leave some readers with in his description of what “ticks off” the devil: “reading a Christian book, thinking godly thoughts, dreaming about heaven and other such blah-blah-blah.” Others, doggone it, are just gonna like it. (Sept.)
Library Journal
Lucado, called "America's Pastor" by Christianity Today, is almost more an industry than a mere writer—he has averaged more than three books a year since the late 1990s. In this, his only full-length new work for 2011, Lucado makes a pointed connection between the life journeys of his readers and the working out of God's will. He re-emphasizes the links among Jesus's humility and courageous acts, as suggested by the Bible, and our own stories. His book includes numerous briefly recounted life stories—his own, Nelson Mandela's, his mother's—to make the point that the human "story indwells God's." VERDICT While Lucado's theology is not new—incarnation and redemption are age-old themes—his approach is fresh and engaging. Likely to draw the interest of individual Christians and many church reading groups.

Chapter One

God's story is glorious, surprising, victorious, and beautiful. His story, when we really listen closely, is our story.

Do you remember a time you got lost? Perhaps it was a crowded day at the mall, and you wandered away from dad and Mom for just a moment, and they were gone. You felt the paralyzing fear of looking around and failing to see the north star of your parents' strong presence. You were lost.

Maybe it was a school trip to the zoo and you inadvertently lingered at the monkey cage while the rest of the class moved on. Before you knew it, you were alone. People were everywhere, but not a face in the crowd was familiar. Lost!

It might have been a drive late at night, and a wrong turn spun you around, and, truth be known, you had no idea where to go next.

These moments of lostness can leave a pit in your stomach and bring fear to your soul ... until the store clerk finds your parents, your teacher taps you on the shoulder and says, "Keep up with the class," or a gas station attendant pulls out a map and shows you how to get back on the interstate.

What is even worse is coming to a point in life when we realize that we have lost our way as a human being. We might know our mailing address and how to get to school, work, or church, but we are not sure why we are on this planet. We have no sense of our purpose.

It is in these moments that we look to God, the Master Storyteller, and discover that the best way to understand our story is to listen to his. As we understand God's story and where we fit within it, the haze begins to clear and our story begins to make sense.

Tell about a time in your childhood when you got lost and how you felt when you were finally found.

As you watch the video teaching segment for session 1, featuring Max Lucado, use the following outline to record anything that stands out to you.

An uninformed Munchkin

When everything changes

Getting lost in Grandma's story

What knowing does to us

Knowing God's story

The central message of God's story

Your story indwells God's story

1. Share about a time when someone told you about your family history and certain things about you and your family members began to make sense.

2. Tell about a time you were reading the Bible (God's story) and a light went on in your heart as you realized that this was really your story.

3. If the story of the Bible is going to make sense, it is important to know how it begins and how it ends. In your own words, how does the Bible begin? What are the epic themes that launch us into the story of the Bible (Genesis)?

In your own words, how does the Bible end? What are the epic themes that conclude the story of the Bible (Revelation)?

4. How does your family history help you have a sense of who you are and where your life is going? How does knowing the story of God's family in the Bible help you know who you are and where you are going?

5. Max talked about being dropped into Munchkin Land and being very confused because he did not actually know the storyline of The Wizard of Oz. How can reading the Bible without any context or background become a frustrating or dangerous enterprise?

6. What is one of your favorite stories in the Bible and how do you see yourself and your personal story informed by this portion of God's Word?

7. Read: John 3:16–17. In the video, Max said that this portion of God's story contains one of the central messages of the Bible. What core messages do you find in this passage?

How can these messages help us understand who we are and how we are to live in this journey through life?

8. Read: Ephesians 1:11 – 14. How do you see God's story and our story woven together in this passage of the Bible?

9. What approach to learning God's Word has most helped you dig in and grow in your love for the Bible?

10. How can your group members pray for you, encourage you, and keep you accountable in reading the Bible and seeking to know God's story in greater depth?

Take time as a group to pray in some of the following directions:

• Thank God for his Word, the Bible. Ask him to help you know and love his Word so that you may grow to see your story woven into his story.

• Pray for people you care about who are wandering and lost because they do not know God's story.

• Confess where you have avoided or neglected digging into God's story in the Bible. Pray for a renewed commitment to read and study the Scriptures with fresh passion.

• Lift up group members who have shared a desire to grow in their knowledge of and love for God's Word. Pray that they will take the steps needed, and exercise the discipline required, to go deep into the truth of the Bible.

Personal Reflection

Take time to think through three or four of your favorite stories in the Bible. Why are you drawn to these stories? How do you see your story connected to these stories? How did God work in these accounts and what are ways you have seen God work in similar ways in your life?

Personal Action

Contact a patriarch or matriarch in your family and ask if you can spend time with them, face to face or over the phone. Ask questions about your family, their life, and those who have gone before you. Listen with an open heart and seek to discover more about what has formed you and those you love.

Group Engagement

Consider inviting each group member to make a personal commitment to read and reflect on the Bible in the weeks your group meets. Don't have a required reading plan, but have each person set a personal goal. Then, when you meet, ask every person to tell about how they are doing in meeting their own goal and, if possible, to share one lesson they learned in their reading and how it impacts and informs their personal story.

I love Max Lucado, but was disappointed that this purchase was just a sample of the complete book. Had I known that, I would have purchassed the book to begin with. Somehow B&N needs to make it better known to consumer that books that are samples are just that and not the complete books.

I, too, thought what I was buying was the book. Very disappointed to discover it was only a sample, and ended up spending more to actually get the book.

GOD'S STORY, YOUR STORY (Youth Edition) When HIS Story Becomes Yours By Max Lucado Max Lucado asks "what is the text (or story) of our lives?" We cannot look inside of ourselves to discover who we are, we must look at ourselves through God's eyes to discover what we can be! Ordinary people can do extraordinary things when we join our story with God's. But we must pray for strength against Satan's attacks so we can complete our story. The goal of every story is home, whether we are going home, improving home, or trying to keep home safe. This is much like the Christian life when we are striving for the perfect family and home, which can only be found with our Heavenly Father. To find the path we must listen for God's voice to lead us. God will never forsake us. Even if we make a wrong turn He will redeem our story through His on the cross. Because of the cross, the final chapter of our story - Death - becomes the introduction to our new life after death. At the end of this book are review questions about each chapter to help the reader to grasp the principles put forth by Max. Each chapter has personal experience pieces by teens to expand on the points Max is making. This is a well written book that teen readers should appreciate and learn from. This would be appropriate as a gift or as a study book for a youth group. Read it and discover the plot behind your story!

I, also, thought I was purchasing the complete book. This was a wasted purchase. I am sure the "real" book will be worth the purchase.

I was completely engrossed in this book from start to finish. This is Max Lucado's best book to date. I appreciated each and every story that was shared in the book, and I found myself near tears many times. I think the thing that struck me the most is that the emphasis of the book is that God is there in every single circumstance, and He is guiding you through the hard times. All of us go through struggles. Some of us live a life fraught with struggles. Does that mean that God is not in control? Absolutely not! There was a time I did not like Max Lucado. I used to feel that he did not dig deeply into the wisdom of the Scriptures. I am happy to report that is not longer the case! In recent years, Lucado has delved so deeply into the Word of God, and he always brings encouragement even in the midst of utter chaos. Everything happens for a reason, and everyone is here for a purpose. This is an easy read written in Lucado's fantastically readable style. You will find true encouragement as you surrender your will to the Lord of the universe! This book was provided to me free of charge in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated in any way, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.

This is just a preview. I'm sure the book is great, but this is not the whole book. Don't buy this product thinking it is the whole book. This product is very misleading.

Like all of Max Lucado's books, I really enjoyed reading it. He has a way of making me feel so much closer to the Lord and that is something that we all should be seeking. I recommend this book of everyone interested in seeking a relationship with the Lord.

I am so much of a fiction reader that I often scoff at non fiction and skip it. Reading books like this remind me that there is so much out there to benefit from. I was in sixth or seventh grade when I first experienced something from Max Lucado, but since then when I have seen his name on a book, I knew it would be worth while. And even more recently I have started adding his children books to my shelves for my girls. They are some of my toddler AppleBlossom's favorites. Christian Fiction can open doors and suggestions to topics and make you want to delve further into scriptures mentioned, but it is in the blunt and to the point - down to earth - non fiction writings like this when as a reader one can truly challenge themselves and really delve further. I enjoyed this book and it makes me do a lot of necessary thinking. My only qualm is that although several different scripture translations are used, The Message Bible is used a lot, and I have issues with paraphrase Bibles as I feel like they lose so much in the translation. Yet at the same time, maybe this is a seed to be dropped for some that will help them in their journey along the way. After all that's what matters.

B&N has burned me for what I hope is the last time. If it sounds too good to be true, then it isn't a good deal. I do not have time to review every purchase. I was looking for this particular max lucado ebook . It was the first one that showed up in my search. Its a SAMPLE. I'll get it from the loical library now. Not gonna spend anymore $$ at B&N. I'm embarrassed to admit this has happenec to me several times. My fault for trusting and not being watchful. Misleading and disappointing. No more.
