Meet the Author

JAMES WELDON JOHNSON (1871–1938) was a songwriter, poet, novelist, journalist, critic, autobiographer, lawyer, and public servant. With his brother John Rosamond, he wrote “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” which became the African American national anthem. He was United States consul to Venezuela and Nicaragua, executive director of the NAACP, and a professor of creative literature at Fisk University. His many books include The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man.

    A most dynamic book!

    A few years ago, our youth leader gave a group of us the opportunity to dramatize God's Trombones. We got so into it that we had to do repeat performances at our church. The content of this book has changed our lives forever! This book is definitely something to I'd share!

    Seven of the most moving poems ever written

    I think James Weldon Johnson was a brilliant poet. His language is so colorful and things are described so beautifully, it's hard not to like this book!
