Overview

IF ALL THAT IS GOOD CONSIDERS YOU EVIL, ARE YOU?

Once human but now immortal, Supreme Commander Lord Tanaros fled the realm of Men and chose darkness when he killed his adulterous wife and his liege king who cuckholded him. A thousand years have passed in service to his master, the dark god Satoris. The world view Satoris as Evil Prime and the name of Tanaros is the byword for treachery.

The races have united in their quest to rid the world of the Dark God and his minions. The key to the prophecy is the beautiful Elvish princess Cerelinde—and Satoris has captured her.

Yet not all tales told are true and evil may have another face. Satoris refuses to act like the monster that he is made out to be for he recognizes in Cerelinde a spark of the love that he once bore for his fellow gods. But this spark of light might prove to be a danger to Satoris...and a greater danger for Tanaros and all that he holds dear. For Cerelinde might remind him that the heart that he willed to iron an eon ago is still very much mortal.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Lord Satoris Banewreaker has the best of intentions when he opposes Haomane, his brother god, but his actions sunder the world of Urulat. Carey's complex Sundering fantasy series, of which this follows 2004's Banewreaker, challenges the reader more than her well-received Kushiel trilogy (Kushiel's Dart, etc.). The stately pace, the plethora of names and sentient species (of which Man is only one) and the difficult main characters-cold, dignified gods-will put off some fans of the earlier, more accessible series. In addition, the author owes too obvious a debt to Tolkien: hobbitlike folk bear powerful, mystical objects analogous to Frodo's ring, while the ethereally beautiful Cerelinde could have been lifted bodily from Loth Lorien. On the other hand, a figure like Tanaros, who retains his honor by slaying his wife and king for betraying him, shows Carey can still create strong, original characters, and the climax, when gods and men fall in battle like ninepins, not only nicely ties everything up but is quite moving as well. Agent, Jane Dystel. (Aug.) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
Library Journal
War between the exiled god Satoris and his sibling gods has finally broken out as Satoris has captured the elven woman Cerelinde, who is instrumental in keeping the peace among those allied against the dark god. Leading Satoris's troops is the immortal general Tanaros, who finds himself falling in love with his lord's gentle captive while she seeks to undermine her captors' violent plans. The author of the "Kushiel's Legacy" trilogy continues her latest series with this sequel to Banewreaker, telling a story that turns the standard views of good and evil on their heads. A good choice for fantasy collections and particularly where Carey's books have a following. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

    A reviewer

This story had so many twists and turns that you never guess what is actually going to happen at the end. Let me tell you it is probably not what you expect. Once again Carey has written a gripping saga that you just cant put down. As soon as I finished I checked to see if the next one was out yet. Unfortunatly it's not : '

    more from this reviewer

The plot is exciting and memorable.

Long ago the world of Urulat was created by the Seven Shapers who made the races in their own images. The eldest brother Haomane did not like what his brother Satoris did with his creation, giving them free will, the ability to think for themselves and the urge to strive so they won¿t become stagnant and complacent. He ordered his sibling to withdraw his gift and when he refused the Shapers went to war Sundering the world as a by product of battle........................ Haomane and his siblings live together not seen by their creations while Satoris walks the earth and lives in the fortress he created, the underground realm of Darkhaven. Satoris¿s ally, the one thousand year old immortal Supreme Commander Lord Tanaros kidnaps the ellyon (elven) Princess Cerelinde and takes her back to Darkhaven. This stops Haomane¿s prophecy from being fulfilled which would end in Satoris¿ death. He could permanently destroy any chance of the prophecy being fulfilled by killing the princess but that is something he refuses to do. As Haomane¿s allies make ready for war Satoris decides that his allies will also fight rather than endure a siege in Darkhaven. Both sides know that whoever wins, the undoing of the Sundering will take place....................... There are many different sentient species in the world of Urulat and with the Sundering, each race wars against the other just as the Shapers do. Haomane is never seen and uses lies and misdirection to paint his brother as the enemy that must be destroyed. Satoris who was not responsible for the Sundering is an enigmatic and mysterious being who got cast in the role of villain due to his brother¿s deception. There is a cast of hundreds and it takes careful reading to figure who is the ally of what Shaper. The Godslayer storyline is about the races getting ready for war and Jacqueline Carey demonstrates her talent as fantasist by making the plot exciting and memorable................. Harriet Klausner
