Goin' to Boston: An Exuberant Journey in Song

Overview

Inspired by a folksong, the trip from country to city in vintage 1920 vehicles has never been more ebullient, as reflected in Emily Bolam's delightful watercolors. Overview

Inspired by a folksong, the trip from country to city in vintage 1920 vehicles has never been more ebullient, as reflected in Emily Bolam's delightful watercolors. Led by a little girl on a bicycle, people travel to Boston in carts and carriages, on buses, on horseback, in wagons and cars. They are headed for the beautiful Boston Common where people gather to sing and dance, buy and sell, exercise and relax- in short, to enjoy themselves as people have enjoyed open spaces for centuries. Sheet music and a historical description of commons make up the endnotes.

Led by a girl on a bicycle, a collection of farmers, families, animals, and musicians takes a rollicking trip to Boston Common in this new version of an old Appalachian folk song.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Margolin revives an Appalachian folk song in this jaunty lyrical tale about traveling to Boston. A blue-smocked girl on her bicycle, basket brimming with red tulips, sets out from the countryside: Good-bye, Pappy, I'm goin' to Boston, Ear-lye in the morning. She's soon joined by a growing assortment of fellow travelers and animals who bounce, beep and clippity-clop along the route and reveal the destination (Won't we look pretty on the Common, Ear-lye in the morning). A farmer atop his tractor carting a prize-winning pig, a band of musicians and a shepherd with his eager flock number among the visitors to the Boston Common, depicted in Bolam's (Sleepy, Sleepy!) briskly blithe paintings. Old-fashioned vehicles (a bus with chickens and suitcases tied on top joins the procession) and people in vintage dress recall a simpler era as they parade over creamy peach-colored hills and blue-green fields on which swirls of thick paint add texture. Three full-color spreads depict their arrival at the bustling Common. Bolam evokes the ebullient atmosphere of a well-loved park on a sunny afternoon, with maypole dancing, fiddling and jump-roping. The song's sheet music and a lengthy historical note complete the book. All ages will appreciate the upbeat rhythm and cheery pictures that nostalgically celebrate communal green spaces. Ages 3-7. PreS-Gr 2-Inspired by an old Appalachian folk song, Margolin adds her own stanzas to the original first verse and refrain. A child waves good-bye to her Pappy and begins riding her bike toward Boston "Ear-lye in the morning." Along the way, human and animal friends in a variety of vehicles join the parade-one in a tractor, two on a mule, and a family in a 1920s jalopy. Upon arriving at Boston Common, they all either sell their wares or dance around a May Pole and watch boats on the pond. Bolam's bright and cheery illustrations fill the pages with idyllic details of folks enjoying their park. The artist has chosen a spring palette of new greens, sunny yellows, and clear blues. All verses are repeated at the end of the book next to the sheet music. The author's final note imparts some history about the song and Boston Common. Storytellers will delight in adding this story/song to their repertoire.-Blair Christolon, Prince William Public Library System, Manassas, VA Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Riding along, a little girl inspires a parade of people as she travels by bicycle to visit Boston Common. Following the verses of a 1920s Appalachian folk song, she is soon joined by a horse-drawn cart; a tractor towing a pig; and a family riding in their Model T. The caravan continues to grow as it is joined by a shepherd and his flock, a bus full of people and chickens, and even a small band. The repetitive verses carry the groups to the Common where they sing, dance, eat, play, and relax. A closing illustration features an idyllic scene as the people enjoy the afternoon in the park. Simple line illustrations shaded in soft colors illustrate the ever-growing group of travelers. A note from the author and sheet music follow the text. While there is some merit to having simple songs available in picture books for group sing-alongs and the repetition will encourage joining in, an unfortunate coupling of rather plain illustrations with a very, very long song may limit the audience.
