Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathleen Karr
The twenty-first of the popular chapter book series finds "Everyman" first-grader Freddy taking on his latest challenge: monsters in the attic! The eight chapters begin slowly. The concerns of Chapter 1—Will Freddy ever get out of bed? More to the point, why would he want to stay home in bed with potential monsters in the attic?—are followed by an equally endless school bus ride in Chapter 2, with bully Max in the fore. At last Freddy's teacher, Mrs. Wushy, gets to discuss bats. From then on the plot thickens and the pace improves as Freddy's best friend, the pragmatic Robbie, arrives for a sleepover. Will the boys be able to sneak into the attic while the rest of Freddy's family sleeps? What happens if, gasp, they actually find the monster? Early readers will enjoy the monster solution, but they will enjoy Max's last page comeuppance even more. The back matter includes an author's note and "Freddy's Fun Pages:" his signature Shark Journal (about the "water bats"—stingrays); a Bat Quiz mistakenly called ?True or False;' and two artsy-crafty projects.
