Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
A young boy is bursting with joy as he and his older sister travel to the ocean. They walk to the bus station carrying their bags. They giggle and jiggle with anticipation on the bus as the road goes on and on. Then they are on bicycles heading for the beach. Running over the hot sand, wading in the waves, swimming and splashing, drifting with the tide, eating lunch and ice cream, they enjoy a perfect day. Their shadows stretch long on the sand in front of them as leave for home. The active, colorful illustrations support the exuberance of the rhyming text. Children will delight in the closing picture of the boy removing his swim trunks and discovering the fresh tan on most of his body. 2002, Peel Productions,
— Phyllis Kennemer
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-A briskly told story in rhyme of a day at the beach. Setting off first by train, then bus, then bicycle (it's not clear where the bicycle comes from), a boy and his older sister finally arrive at the seashore, where they spend a glorious day in the surf and in the sand. "We're swimming-splishing, splashing-`Let's be porpoises and whales/ Or pirates on a treasure hunt for mermaids' silvery scales.'" The absence of an accompanying adult is questionable, but, taken at face value, the story is sunny and upbeat. Barrette's winsome, full-page watercolor illustrations reflect the cheerful tone of the outing.-Sally R. Dow, Ossining Public Library, NY Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
