Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Smiley, who pens the nationally syndicated column "Shore Duty," is something of an Erma Bombeck for the military-wife set. She wittily and poignantly writes about being a navy spouse left on base with two young children while her husband is on deployment ("the D-word") overseas, just as the impending war in Iraq is dominating the headlines. Raised a navy brat, Smiley is no stranger to military life, but that doesn't preclude the fear, frustration and freak-outs that often accompany her predicament. Fellow military spouses will appreciate Smiley's humorous accounts of attending Spouse Club support meetings, handling household tasks ("My one saving grace was the toilet," she writes about a broken commode in her guest room. "A mental buffer military wives can depend on is the fact that household chores continue despite all else") and simply coping with the realities of having a husband thousands of miles away who might not return. Smiley's prose is simple and straightforward, and her humor is clever, often emerging in passages when she's at her lowest. Curiously, Smiley doesn't express her views about the Iraq war, and she often ignores the conflict's realities as her personal woes take over. Agent, Rick Broadhead. So So book

I had heard so many great reviews of this book and it was ok. Yes it did tell the things that a military spouse goes through but it also went into what I thought was a crush on someone while her husband was deployed. That part I didn't like. I would hate for people to read this and think thats what all military spouses do. But other than that subject in the book. I thought it was a good book.

Great read for civilians and military

This is a funny, entertaining read... that has a message for us all. I applaud Sarah Smiley for writing something so personal, and for helping us all to realize that it's okay to admit to "going overboard" during difficult times.

    Makes us all sound stupid

I was very excited to read this book, as I am a military wife. Unfortunately, Ms. Smiley did not support her husband, had a sick fascination with her gynecologist, and made all military wives and wives groups sound like we are a bunch of neurotic people who can't handle it while a husband is away. A huge waste of time and money. Not a funny book. You'd think, since she is a self proclaimed Navy brat, that she'd be able to handle the ups and downs of military life. Absolutely terrible. Don't waste your time or your money.

    Waste Of Time And Money

The was without a doubt the most horrible book I've ever read. My 'favorite' part of the book is how Sarah gets mad because people expect that since she grew up in the Navy life, she should be able to handle its ups and downs better than other spouses who's entire lives haven't revolved around the Navy. Yes, that's exactly what I expected. I literally couldn't believe the amount of whining that went into this book. I also can't believe that Sarah has such a hard time handling Navy life, considering she's been around it her entire life. Yes, she absolutely should be used to how the Navy works by now, and yes, people should expect that of her. Sarah has got to be the most self absorbed, selfish, immature, whiny military wife I've ever heard of. This book doesn't do anything but cast an embarassing light on military spouses. Any civilain who reads this book gets the impression that military wives are whiny, immature little brats with no backbone, who can't handle being a military wife when military life gets tough. I promptly threw this book in the garbage. What a complete waste of time and money.

    A reviewer

I found this book to be pretty on target with being the spouse of a military serviceman. My husband is currently deployed and though I may not have had all of the 'mis'adventures Ms. Smiley had, I certainly could relate very closely. Though in another review the reader said she was appalled, I found Ms. Smiley to be very honest and truly appreciate her sharing so openly. Congratulations on a job well done!

    Humorous and Honest

Funny and entertaining! The author does not pretend to tell others 'how to' make it through deployments. Instead, she gives an honest account of her own experiences as a military wife. I laughed, I cried and felt like I was there with her through every crisis.

    I'm on the fence

I appreciate Mrs. Smiley's honesty and got a kick out of, and related to, some of her mishaps. Props to her husband for letting her tell this story. I find one thing to be certain: By her own admission, she was not cut out to be a military wife. Come on, we're stronger than this!

    Appauling

I am absolutely disgusted by this book. I was so excited to read it and was so disappointed that the majority of the book centered around the wives fascination with her gynecologist. She did not support her husband during his deployment and put her own needs first at all times. I was so dissapointed that she did not convey the true nature of a military wife - we are the backbone of the army. We support our husbands and have to deal with some difficult situations, but we push through. I would not suggest this book if you are looking for an accurate portrayal of the life of a military wife.
