Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The editor took her first out of country trip at the age of thirteen, and it turned out to be a life altering experience. Since then, she has made trips to many corners of the globe. Her experiences inspired her to compile travel stories from other kids in hopes it will inspire readers to learn more about their world through travel. The 24 vignettes are authored by teens of all ages and each brings their own personality to their story. The stories relate experiences from as far away as India and Hong Kong and as near as our own country, but the underlying message is the same—that travel opens one's heart and mind in a very positive way. There are even a few stories about historical travelers such as Sagagewea. A realistic addition to geography studies in the classroom, the book also provides travel resources for students interested in going abroad. 2003, Beyond Words Publishing, Ages 10 to 14.

School Library Journal
Gr 5-9-Young people between the ages of 10 and 19 who traveled "outside their comfort zone," to exotic places or just to summer camp, write about the experiences and challenges they faced. Most are very revealing, involving readers in their excitement and fears. The travelers discovered firsthand the poverty of third-world countries, the fright of being alone, or the joy of meeting new friends. Some of the selections are more about self-discovery, as in the diabetic teen who went to summer camp and began to take charge of her own blood-sugar levels. An opportunity to volunteer on an eco-farm in Ecuador found one girl in an isolated area without electricity or hot water but with the satisfaction that comes from physical labor. Historical tales of adventurers appear at intervals on gray pages, such as Sacagawea's journey with Lewis and Clark and 17-year-old Marco Polo's trip with his father to China. Black-and-white photos of the present-day travelers appear in a clever postcard graphic at the beginning of their story.-Vicki Reutter, Cazenovia High School, NY Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
