Going the Other Way: Lessons from a Life in and out of Major League Baseball

Overview

Last spring Billy Bean, the only living openly gay former major leaguer, gained national attention with his breakthrough memoir, Going the Other Way—an unprecedented chronicle of America's national pastime that went on to sell more than 25,000 copies. Bean brings us inside the clubhouse and onto the playing field, offering dead-on insight into the game and the physical and emotional demands it makes on players. Bean faced an agonizing choice, in secrecy and solitude, between continuing to play the game he loved and the honesty of a loving relationship. By turns heartbreaking and farcical, ruminative and uncensored, the book culminates in a respectful, deeply felt appeal to Major League Baseball and other professional team sports to live up to their promise of equality and opportunity. A testament to the power of the single voice, Going the Other Way is an exemplary American tale that points the way toward a more perfect game, one in which all men and women can pursue their athletic dreams free of prejudice and discrimination. An eight-page photo insert is featured in this New York Times bestseller.

Great story but too many stats

I read this book and have to admit that the story is a very good one and I am glad that he did the book and took the chances that he did. But, I do have to say in my honest opinion after reading quite a few books (bio) that there was much to much of stats and other name players of baseball throughout the entire book. I really wanted more of Billy and maybe more details of his intimate moments and other adventures if it was avaialable. I felt myself quite frequently skimming pages that I saw were leading off with long explanations about these other players and their stats, which I have no clue what they mean. I finished the book but was a bit disapointed with how much emphasis was put on the elaboration of baseball, its players and the excessive amount of figures and stats that goes along with it. Yes, he was a professional baseball player, and no one could deny that...but I just think some of the extra details involving soooooooooo many players names and stats could have been left out. It might have shortened the book a few pages but I really don't think it would have been missed for the average reader.

    An Honest Story.

This is the best autobiography I've ever read! It lifts up your heart, and break it many times over. I read this book in one day, I could not put it down! I wish everyone would read this book, it would help to get past prejudices. You do not need to be gay to enjoy this book, it's not just about that. It's about a man who dared to follow his dream(s) and that man just happened to be gay. It's amazing and unbelievable, buy it, trust me it's worth it!

    A Legend Speaks

Learning does not end after the 12th grade it continues on in life and if we are lucky, we follow in the footsteps of a Legend. Billy Bean is that Legend who in his personal life conqured the fear of being gay. Life is about two things - love and fear. Billy chose Love and I'm so proud of him! This is the best book I've ever read. Thank You Billy.

    LIFE CHANGING BOOK

this book changed my life forever. If you are a closeted gay male in a straight male dominated work enviroment, then you need to read this book. Great for law enforcement officers, firefighters, military, or professional athletes.... or just anyone who is gay and closeted. A must read!
