Going to Grandma's

Overview

Old Man Hawkins was a larger-than-life character among deer hunters, or more precisely among tellers and hearers of tall tales. His self-proclaimed method of hunting deer by holding a mirror in one hand and his rifle in the other pointing backward over a shoulder was, he said, to be fair to the deer. It was a story, Davis tells us, that would occupy his father on the drive to Grandmaf_(tm)s house.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Noted storyteller, Donald Davis, offers a collection of three yarns all having to do with the theme of Grandma. The longest one, the title track, is a lengthy tale about the stories that were told in the car on the way to Grandma's house. The centerpiece of this story is an old man who loves to hunt. His neighbors give him three shots and tell him that if he can kill something with those three shots, he can go on hunting. If he cannot, then he will have to stop. One blunder after another happens until he finally gets off the final shot. It is so powerful that it knocks him over and he thinks he wasted the last shot. You will have to listen to find out what on earth he hit! The other two, shorter pieces feature two noodle head stories about Jack who gets outwitted time and again. All in all, a nice collection for storytellers and listeners alike. 2002, August House Audio,
