Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amy Orr
Mercer Mayer has written and illustrated more than 300 children's books. Little Critter is a character he created for the story "Just for You." Little Critter has been the main character in more than 60 paperback picture books. Now, Little Critter joins the "My First I Can Read Books" series in Going to the Firehouse. In this tale, Little Critter and his classmates take a field trip to the Critterville firehouse. Fireman Joe and his dog, Sparky, give the class a tour of the firehouse. Fireman Joe teaches the students about fire safety. At the end of the field trip, Fireman Joe gives the class a souvenir, a fireman's hat. This book is excellent for parents who are encouraging their children to read independently. For teachers, Going to the Firehouse is perfect for a unit in fire safety, especially during October which is National Fire Prevention month. Going to the firehouse is a perfect companion for a trip to a local firehouse. Reviewer: Amy Orr

Youngsters will enjoy accompanying Little Critter and his class on a trip to the firehouse. The endearing creature comes dressed in his fire boots and jacket and helps Fireman Joe test his hose. The class watches Fireman Joe check and climb the fire truck's ladder, and they listen to his safety tips. Emerging readers will appreciate the simple sentences, short words, and repetition, and they will love being pulled into Mayer's brightly colored illustrations in thoughtfully composed single pages and spreads. Put this on display with Lisa Desimini's Dot the Fire Dog (Scholastic, 2001), Wong Herbert Yee's Fireman Small (Houghton, 1994), and Monica Wellington's Firefighter Frank (Dutton, 2002) to celebrate Fire Safety Week.-Laura Scott, Farmington Community Library, MI

It was okay but I think it should be a lit cheaper for how short it is

This is another great book about Little Critter. Great pictures & a good story. At times it seems a little more advanced than other books at the same I Can Read level.
