The title may be misleading: Gold is not a Linda Eder retrospective but the Minnesota-raised songbird's latest studio recording. Unlike its standards-laden predecessors, Gold shines with a contemporary, pop-sounding repertoire that should expand the former Star Search champion's cult following far beyond Broadway's boundaries. Eder's husband, theater composer Frank Wildhorn (Jekyll & Hyde, The Scarlet Pimpernel), has fashioned a variety of perfectly tailored tunes to showcase his wife's fluid and soaring dramatic soprano -- including "Until I Don’t Love You Any More," a touching survivor's anthem, and the bluesy "Everything That's Wrong," which uses accordion and understated percussion to achieve a late-night cross between country and cabaret. Other outstanding new songs include "If I Should Lose My Way" and "Gently Break My Heart," both of which overflow with quiet passion, and the powerful title tune, debuted by Eder at the opening ceremonies of the 2002 Winter Olympics. (The song is from Wildhorn's upcoming Camille Claudel, a musical based on the life of the French sculptor.) Four tastefully chosen covers add color to the album's many moods, including Boz Scaggs' "We're All Alone"; Dobie Gray's propulsive "Drift Away"; a spicy take on Dusty Springfield's classic "Son of a Preacher Man"; and "Here Comes the Sun," a heartfelt tribute to the late George Harrison. Like Eder's glorious voice, this release is sophisticated, full-bodied, and warm. Gold deserves to go platinum.

There are songs that just shouldn't be covered anymore, as timeless as they may seem. "Here Comes the Sun" is one of them, and Linda Eder seems to have made a major misstep in opening her album Gold with it. Her version is down-tempo, saccharine, and overly produced. It is a shame, because the rest of the album doesn't seem to follow suit. Taken as a whole, Gold may be one her strongest efforts, as she pours a lot of personal emotion and energy into a mix of classic pop standards and show tunes authored by her husband, Frank Wildhorn. Even songs with relatively simple lyrics, like "Until I Don't Love You Anymore," become touching with Eder's clear, passionate delivery. The album's second cover song, "Son of a Preacher Man," hits the mark a little more squarely than the first. Eder relishes the opportunity here to belt out the lyrics in full voice without needing to sound too pretty and manages to be a little bit sexy at the same time. Fans of Eder's previous show tune-laden works might find her journeys into blues, country, and rock styles here a little jarring, but this album represents growth for Eder, even if every song doesn't individually impress.

Tired renditions of rock classics. Although Linda is extremely talented. This foray into rock does not showplace her exceptional talents. The arrangements are almost criminal. Buy any of Linda's CD's EXCEPT this one.

I had never heard of Linda Eder -- til a friend gave me a gift certificate and I chose her and Norah Jones. I surely am not sorry. Her voice at times sounds like the one and only Barbra! I don't think you will waste money here -- not if you enjoy this kind of music ;)

This is a WONDERFUL album! I love all the songs, and I am so impressed with the vocal growth Linda has made since "Jekyll and Hyde." Her voice is smooth, easy, and a joy to listen to. I truly play this CD nearly every day. You will love it!
