Overview

Kenneth Grahame's unjustly neglected collections of vignettes, reminiscences, and inventions capture the ingenuities of a family of children — three boys and two girls — who live magnanimous lives nourished by the secret expeditions and private games they share. Overview

Kenneth Grahame's unjustly neglected collections of vignettes, reminiscences, and inventions capture the ingenuities of a family of children — three boys and two girls — who live magnanimous lives nourished by the secret expeditions and private games they share. Written in the last few years of the 19th century, as Grahame looked back fondly at his own childhood, these sketches of growing up are poised artfully between two states of consciousness — that of a child protagonist and that of a remembering adult — and so manage to evoke both the active energies of youth and the nostalgic tenderness of reflection. This book, and a companion volume entitled Dream Days, remain beguiling today. While their language is sophisticated, confident reader of ten and up might easily find themselves caught in the web of story the author weaves; older readers have no excuse not to revel in these marvelous volumes.

Collection of sketches, stories and essays by the author of The Wind in the Willows.

Editorial Reviews

Bookman
There is no book about children like "The Golden Age," unless it is "Dream Days.
Children's Literature
This precursor of The Wind in the Willows, a reprint of the 1900 edition, combines childhood imagination and the wistful reminiscence of the middle-age narrator/author. Eighteen vignettes of adventures in rural 19th century England are told in the sophisticated language of the period. Three boys and two girls play ingenious games¾"tropical forest," where "insects that darted to and fro became sea monsters, the gnats that hung above them swelled to albatrosses, and the pond itself stretched out into a vast inland sea, whereon a navy might ride secure." Typical of the cleverness of this happy little troupe on their farm, Selina has a doll tea party, Harold creates a drama of the Round Table, and the boys are deterred from a walk on the road by field mice and frogs and other treasures of the ditch. A tender chapter, "The Roman Road," transports the unnamed narrator on a quest to shake his disappointment and perhaps find Lancelot, or at the very least, a new sense of confidence, which he does. Shepard's pen and ink drawings capture the mood of the period and add to the fantasy and humor of the stories. Although the reading level is complex and sprinkled with archaic words like anon and trice, Grahame provides a wonderful excursion with children who are adept at escaping from their very proper world. His exquisite writing captures the essence of childhood and the unique capacity of children to create kingdoms and heroes from mere wisps of information, especially when bored. Today's reader-audience will include those who love a literary challenge. 2000, The Company of Books/Akadine Press. Ages 12 up. Reviewer: Elaine Wick
