The best thing about this book is that it makes the fairy tales of Marie-Catharine d'Aulnoy accessible to the modern reader. Madame d'Aulnoy coined the term "fairy tale" when she published her book "Tales of the Fairies." Although most of her tales were embedded in her novels, many of them work well as stand-a-lone fairy tales. This also explains some of the seemingly unhappy endings because the fairy tales were meant to serve as a warning to the characters of the novels.

When I saw this was being released again, I bought several copies- loved this book as a child, and love having it on my shelf again. The illustrator set the bar for fairy tale illustration. Most of these tales may not be suitable for the very young, but it is truly a classic

Buy this for young children with caution. Most of the stories are short enough to keep the attention of younger children, however, while there are plenty of pictures, there are not pictures on every page. This shouldn't be a problem for older children, but it might be for the younger ones. My youngest sister loves this book (she is rather fond of Thumbelina and Kip, the Enchanted Cat) but her twin, who is a little more rambunctious, can't sit still for more than a page or two (they are five). I think I would like this book more if all the pictures were in full color but, I suppose, they are nice enough as they are. Most of the tales are acurate retellings from their "original" writers. For example, Sleeping Beauty, as far as my memory serves, is exactly like Charles Perrault's original telling, however, Little Red Riding Hood takes the form of the more popular, child-friendly telling (in which the wood-cutter saves everyone) as opposed to Perrault's version in which the wolf lives happliy ever after with a belly full of sick grand-ma and foolish, young girl. Don't mind me, though; I am sure such is preferred by the modern parent -I'm just a a college kid who is a stickler for the older, darker Faery tales.

I loved this book as a child ~ the stories are wonderful and the pictures are gorgeous. I was so glad to find it again, and I bought it for my grandniece. Then I decided I had to buy another copy to keep in my house. It's really a treasure.

This is an excellent collection and rendition of fairy tales, and the illustrations are wonderfully done. An excellent value, and a great choice for starting or building a library that will interest children of all ages. The tales are not watered down as found in many of the more contemporary versions, and the illustrations are realistic instead of the cartoon type drawings seen in too many of the more modern versions.

This is my daughter's favorite book. We have three bookcases that pretty much says it all. The stories are beautifully written and highly engaging. It is such a joy to read literature with morals. Highly Recommended.

I was 4 years old when my older sister received this book in 1958. I never loved anything more. I carried this book everywhere I went and would never let it go. I was so happy to find this book again and get it for my 5 year niece. She will love it.

I'm so glad Golden Books re-issued this gem. My uncle gave my sister this in 1959 for her 8th birthday. Like the Velveteen Rabbit, in the beginning it was really splendid, but we wore it out over the years. Now I have a shiny new copy to share with my little girl. My husband bought all the copies in our local bookstore to give as gifts to her friends. The illustrations are magnificent. Anyone who enjoys fairy tales will love these stories, especially Bluecrest, Green Snake, and Grace & Derek. Treat yourself to this book!

Like the rest of the reviews I read I have been searching for this book for years. My original which I read many, many times was lost in a move from Florida to Virginia. I grieved the loss of this book for years. I cried when I saw it had been reissued. I have a ten year old daughter and I cannot wait for her to read it. It is a fairy book without peers.

I cried when my sister recently found and sent me a copy of this book. Growing up as the eldest of four children, I am now 51-years-old, I would sit and read for hours over and over the stories from this wonderful book to my siblings. After years of use, the book became to old to use and my mother throw it away. But we never forgot its beautiful pictures and haunting stories. As I now reread the stories, I find myself remembering my childhood and the wonderful times my siblings and I had reading together. Thank you so much for reprinting this book. Now all four of us have our own copy to pass down to our grandchildren.

When I was six years old, my late great-aunt gave me the original version of this book. I still have it, though it's in tatters. I must have read it a thousand times. I was so pleased to see the reprint in my local B&N store, so I bought it, and will likely buy more copies to give to my nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. This is definately a book that should be passed on to generations to come.

This is IT!!! I got mine when I was 7 for valentines day.. SO GLAD To see it back in print after long years of searching. Although,my binding is off my book but every page and picture is perfect! I bought 8 copies just this christmas for every child I could think of. I am always taken to dreamland everytime I pick up my book. Adrienne Segur is the best artist for children.

At last! I've found it,the book that my sister and I thought was lost forever. We grew up with the original book and when we went off to college our mother gave our beloved book to the church. To our dismay we could not remember the title or the publisher only the haunting illustrations and wonderful stories. For years we have been asking bookstores and antique shops if they knew anything about our book with absolutely no luck. When I found it again last night I nearly cried. I can't wait to get our copies, send my sister hers and lose myself again back in that beautiful land of make believe that I presumed was lost in all but our memories.

I was given this book as an infant and have been thrilled to find it in print again. My three children (boys 7 & 10 and girl age 5) adore this book as much as I did. The illustrations are wonderfully exqiusite and the book is a beautiful collection of stories, most of which I have only read in this book. This book is a keepsake.

Like so many others, I, too, had this book as a child and have carried the haunting illustrations around in my head. Because I could remember neither the title nor author nor illustrator, I had no success in locating the book in used book stores. You can be sure that I will purchase a copy for each of my three young grandaughters, and for my two grown daughters, and for several of my precious women friends - who are natural inhabitants of fairy tales. The stories are unvarnished, with nothing of our current political correctness. The illustrations are lustrous, detailed, hauntingly beautiful, perfectly suited to the tales. This is a book to launch a life-long love...

I had the original book in 1958. What a joy to find it in print again! This is a beautiful book to treasure for years and share with your children and grandchildren. A must have book for children. I would give it ten stars if I could. LOVE IT. The pictures are incredible! Such detail and colors. Even if you just page through the book you will fall in love with it!

I am 45 now... I had this book when I was 7. It's hauntingly beautiful pictures have stayed with me all this time. In testament to what a great book this is, original versions in varying states of decay are going from $200 to $400! My brother remembers the pictures as well, this book is not just a girl thing! The tales themselves are not sanitized, good tales of 'just desserts' for the evil.
