Children's Literature - Jody Little
Rick Riordan, author of the popular "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" series, writes the introduction for this classic tale of Jason and the Argonauts. Initially written in the 1920s, author Colum shares the story of Jason who was raised by the centaur Chiron. When Jason becomes a young man, he returns to his home in Iolcus where he is given a challenge from his uncle, King Pelias. Pelias suggests that Jason travel to Colchis to win the famous Golden Fleece that is guarded by King Aetes. A massive ship, the Argo, is built for Jason's voyage, and Jason enlists heroes from near and far to join him on his journey: Castor, Polydeuces, Orpheus, Atalanta, Hercules and Theses to name a few. On their journey, Orpheus tells the Argonauts great stories from the past. After many setbacks, the Argo reaches Colchis. With the help of Medea, the sorceress daughter of King Aetes, Jason is able to secure the Golden Fleece from the huge labyrinth. The voyage home, however, is filled with more problems: the island of Circe with the beautiful sirens who woo the Argonauts with their haunting songs, and the great desert across which the heroes must carry the Argo. Colum ends his tale with legends of the heroes aboard the Argo, the lives of Jason, Theseus, Atalanta, Hercules and Orpheus. As Riordan mentions in his introduction, the language of the story is "grand and old-fashioned," but readers who enjoy the resurgence of Greek myths in modern novels may appreciate the original versions as well. Was kind of a slow read in places! But was a fantastic background of characters and Greek mythology for the Percy Jackson series and the heroes series of Riordan's. It explains who the referenced gods were and the heroes as well. Worth reading!

My child is ten and reading this book and she says it is very good. She is reading it in school and might be reading a different version. There is great vocabulary and really is enriching her reading skills, her version is written in old english and really she loves it! It is a bit challenging for her, even though she is an advanced reader! Great for people of all ages!

The neeland llc version is exactly what i was looking for! Most of the others looked poor on my nook or lacked the classic illustrations or formatted the illustrations poorly on the nook. I look forward to reading it to my children. I am glad I previewed them before I bought any.
